What the two Nasdaq indexes measure
Nasdaq Composite
The Composite covers domestic and international common stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It is the broader of these two indicators, so its daily move reflects a wider set of Nasdaq-listed companies.
Nasdaq-100
The Nasdaq-100 tracks the 100 largest non-financial Nasdaq-listed companies by market capitalization. It is a narrower index than the Composite; its 31,160.08 close and 0.21% decline should not be substituted for the Composite’s closing level or change. Nasdaq’s market-activity guidance describes both indexes and their scope: Nasdaq market activity guidance.

How the Nasdaq performed against other U.S. indexes
On October 7, the S&P 500 fell 0.2%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.7%, and the Russell 2000 fell 1.3%, according to the Associated Press. The Composite’s 0.22% loss was smaller than the reported declines in the Dow and Russell 2000. These comparisons refer to the same session and are percentage changes, which makes them more useful for comparing daily performance than the indexes’ different point scales.
Associated Press: October 7 market close
What was behind the pullback
The Associated Press described U.S. stocks as retreating from records amid pressure from rising worldwide bond yields, inflation concerns, government debt loads and other concerns. That is reported market context, not evidence that any single factor caused the Nasdaq’s decline.

In early trading on Thursday, October 8, AP reported lower share prices in Europe and Asia and declining U.S. futures after the prior session’s retreat under bond-yield pressure. It also reported Brent crude at $104.32 per barrel, up 4.1%, and U.S. crude at $91.94, up 4.2%, amid uncertainty about crude supplies and Middle East tensions. These were early October 8 observations, not Nasdaq index performance or updated prices for later in the day. Associated Press: early October 8 global markets
Which indicators help explain a daily Nasdaq update?
For a quick daily comparison, start with the session date and exact index, then check the closing level, point change and percentage change. Keep the two indexes separate: their coverage differs, so they can register different daily moves.

Is Nasdaq trading on October 8 already reflected?
No regular-session October 8 index close was available at the October 8, 2026, 10:26 UTC data cutoff: the U.S. regular session had not opened, although Nasdaq’s standard pre-market window was underway. Use October 7 for the latest completed close, and label any October 8 quote as pre-market or intraday with its observation time rather than calling it a close. Nasdaq has announced a separate overnight session planned to begin December 6, 2026; it was not yet in effect at the cutoff.
