The NASA Visible Earth project has decades of earth observation imagery and animations. The Hubble Space Telescope project releases new images regularly. The Mars Perseverance rover feeds real-time imagery from the surface of Mars. The James Webb Space Telescope has released unprecedented imagery of distant galaxies. Each of these programs has a public archive of content available for download.
JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) manages much of NASA’s space program content. Their website has specific footage libraries organized by mission. Searching “JPL footage download” pulls up mission-specific archives where you can find high-quality video files.
Archive.org has mirrors of much NASA content for redundancy. If a file is hard to find on the official NASA site, archive.org often has copies.

The Mission Focus Model: Select one specific space mission (Apollo 11, Space Shuttle Atlantis, Mars Perseverance Rover, James Webb Space Telescope) and stream all available footage, documentation, and related clips in a continuous loop. This model appeals to people interested in that specific achievement. “Apollo 11: The Complete Archive” will be found by everyone searching for Apollo 11. You can rotate missions monthly, so the channel features a different mission each month.
The Curated Journey Model: Create a narrative sequence from human spaceflight history. Start with early rocket development, move to the Mercury program, transition to Gemini, then Apollo, then the Space Shuttle era, then International Space Station footage. Compile 8-12 hours of footage in chronological order. This appeals to people learning about space history and creates a satisfying narrative arc.
The Real-Time/Current Events Model: Feature the latest NASA imagery and announcements. A new Mars rover image arrives—include it in the stream. A new Hubble observation is released—add it. The only restriction NASA places on content is that you cannot suggest that NASA endorses your specific channel or project. Don’t create a channel name like “Official NASA Channel” or imply that your project is affiliated with NASA. “NASA’s Space Exploration Highlights” or “24/7 Space – NASA Imagery and Archive Footage” clearly indicates the source without claiming NASA endorsement.
When you upload to YouTube, include in your description: “Content sourced from NASA public domain archives (nasa.gov/multimedia). No copyright restrictions apply. All content is in the public domain.”

Scaling Your Channel Over Time
Start with one curated compilation of 8-12 hours. Let it loop for a month. Monitor which segments get watched the longest (YouTube provides this data). Once you understand what content resonates, create a second compilation with more of that content, less of what viewers skipped.
By month three, you should have 2-3 different compilations that you rotate. This gives the channel variety and keeps returning viewers interested.
By month six, expand your content scope. If your audience is mostly interested in Mars rovers, create additional Mars-focused compilations. If they love Earth observation, add Earth-focused content. Let your audience’s behavior guide what you produce next.
