The Associated Press reported the same day that Napster had been sold to Infinite Reality for that amount. The buyer said it planned to turn the music brand into a broader social and interactive platform, but the announcements do not establish that those proposed features launched.
Who bought Napster for $207 million?
Infinite Reality, a company focused on immersive digital experiences, announced on March 25, 2025, that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Napster for $207 million. Infinite Reality’s announcement described an agreement to acquire the company; the Associated Press report published that day said Napster had been sold for $207 million.
The available announcements do not specify detailed closing mechanics, asset-transfer terms, or a separate closing date. The $207 million is the announced acquisition price and the amount AP reported as the sale price; the sources do not explain how the price was structured or paid.
Why did Napster sell for $207 million?
The announcement sets out the buyer’s strategic rationale, not a financial valuation analysis. Infinite Reality said it wanted to build on Napster’s music brand and streaming service by creating a more social, interactive destination for artists and fans. The announcement does not explain how the $207 million price was calculated, nor does it provide a breakdown of Napster’s revenue, profit, or assets to assess the valuation independently.

To describe the business it was acquiring, Infinite Reality said Napster was a licensed music service available in 34 countries, with a catalog of more than 110 million tracks, and that it had paid artists and songwriters more than $1 billion cumulatively. These are figures reported by Infinite Reality in its March 2025 announcement, not independently audited figures in the cited coverage.
What did Infinite Reality say it would build?
The buyer’s stated plan was to take Napster beyond conventional streaming. Its announcement proposed features and revenue opportunities including:

- Sold as an Each
- CD features singable and learnable teaching tunes that offer a fun learning experience to kids
- Captivates kids for hours
- Learn fun activities to music
- Ideal for the classroom or at home
- Virtual 3D spaces, virtual concerts, and social listening.
- Tools for artists to connect with fans.
- Physical and virtual merchandise and event tickets.
- AI-powered agents for customer service and community management.
- Analytics, gamification, and cross-promotion with Infinite Reality’s entertainment properties.
These were announced plans, not confirmation that the features were available. Napster CEO Jon Vlassopulos described the rationale this way: “The internet has evolved from desktop to mobile, from mobile to social, and now we are entering the immersive era.” That statement expressed the company’s vision at the time; it does not demonstrate that the proposed transformation succeeded.
How did Napster get here?
Napster began in 1999 as a peer-to-peer file-sharing service. The AP reports that it later closed following copyright litigation, was acquired by Rhapsody in 2011, and was relaunched as a licensed streaming service. That shift—from a file-sharing name to a licensed music service—was the backdrop to Infinite Reality’s 2025 plans to attach social and virtual experiences to the brand.

What is Napster now?
In a September 3, 2026 announcement, Napster described itself as an AI company and said it had incorporated in Saudi Arabia. This is a later corporate-positioning statement, distinct from Infinite Reality’s March 2025 acquisition announcement and music-platform strategy. The September announcement alone does not establish that the 2025 plans were implemented or whether Napster’s earlier music service remains available in the same form.
