NaNoWriMo’s 2024 defense of a neutral stance on AI writing tools drew sharp criticism from writers and sponsors. The nonprofit later closed in April 2025, but reporting points to a combination of financial problems, declining participation, reputational damage and earlier controversies—not the AI dispute alone. The November challenge and the nonprofit that administered it are not the same thing.
What was NaNoWriMo?
NaNoWriMo began in 1999 as a November challenge to write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. The nonprofit behind it organized the challenge and supported a community of participants. In 2024, the organization said it had “Hundreds of thousands of people around the world” taking part, a figure reported as the organization’s claim rather than an independently audited count.
What did NaNoWriMo say about AI?
In late August or early September 2024, the organization said it “does not explicitly support any specific approach to writing, nor does it explicitly condemn any approach, including the use of AI.” It argued that condemning AI categorically could overlook unequal access to human help and the needs of writers with disabilities or different language proficiencies. The Washington Post’s September 4, 2024 report documented the statement and immediate response.
Why were writers angry about the AI position?
Criticism focused in part on NaNoWriMo’s use of classism and ableism to frame opposition to AI. Writers questioned whether generative AI systems rely on writing used for training without consent or compensation, and raised concerns about the labor behind those systems and the value of human authorship. Some also questioned whether AI-generated prose should count toward a challenge centered on writing a draft.

The dispute involved different arguments, not one shared view among all participants. Some defended AI as a possible assistive tool or a way to address barriers; critics said that describing opposition as ableist or classist could imply that disability or poverty made AI necessary. Others distinguished between using a tool for assistance and having it generate prose. These were arguments in a public debate, not settled findings about every writer’s circumstances or every AI tool.
How did the backlash unfold?
The fallout included board departures by writers Daniel José Older and Maureen Johnson and the withdrawal of sponsor Ellipsus. NaNoWriMo revised its messaging, acknowledged bad actors and harm in the AI space, and described its stance as “taking a position of neutrality” while calling for discussion of ethical use. It did not issue an unequivocal ban on AI.

Sponsor responses differed. Dabble founder Chris Banks said the company was “committed to supporting human creativity, not undermining it.” Dabble disagreed with NaNoWriMo’s language but said in September 2024 that it would continue sponsoring the organization at that time. That statement does not establish a current sponsorship. Dabble’s September 12, 2024 statement describes its position.
Did the AI controversy shut down NaNoWriMo?
The nonprofit announced its closure in April 2025. The available reporting does not establish that the AI controversy alone, or directly, caused the closure. The Guardian reported interim executive director Kilby Blades’ account that longstanding financial problems had been compounded by reputational damage. Publishers Weekly reported Blades’ reference to “a six-year downward trend in participation”; the report does not give annual counts or a numerical rate.

The closure followed a wider period of turmoil. The Guardian also covered earlier child-safety and moderation complaints. TechCrunch reported that NaNoWriMo rejected claims that the AI and moderation controversies directly caused its demise. The AI dispute damaged trust and formed part of the organization’s troubled period, but the reporting supports a broader, more cautious explanation rather than a single-cause verdict.

Does the November writing challenge still exist?
The nonprofit’s closure does not prove that writers have stopped holding November writing challenges. The Guardian reported that an organizational email did not expect people to stop writing 50,000 words in November and noted that alternatives had appeared. The reporting cited here does not establish which alternatives remain active today, so it is not possible to identify a current successor on that basis alone.
