That description matches Project Pele, a separate U.S. Department of Defense demonstration project. NANO Nuclear’s KRONOS MMR is a stationary reactor technology proposed for a university research-reactor project; the NRC lists that proposal at 45 megawatts thermal, not 45 megawatts electric.
Why the 5-MW container description points to Project Pele
The U.S. Department of Energy describes Project Pele as a DoD-led mobile microreactor project, with BWX Technologies (BWXT) manufacturing the prototype. DOE gives its output range as 1–5 megawatts electric (MWe) and says the prototype facility is designed for transport in 20-foot shipping containers. The project is for demonstration and testing at Idaho National Laboratory, not a consumer generator offered for sale. DOE’s Project Pele announcement
DOE also described a proposed prototype mobile-reactor demonstration at the lab in its environmental-review summary. The September 2024 announcement included plans and anticipated timing; that dated schedule is not proof of later completion or current operation.
What NANO Nuclear’s KRONOS MMR is
NANO Nuclear describes KRONOS MMR as a stationary, high-temperature gas-cooled microreactor under development. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has proposed a research reactor based on NANO Nuclear technology. The NRC lists the proposed project at 45 MWth, or megawatts thermal. That is a heat-power rating, not an electrical-output figure, and it should not be described as 45 MWe. NRC’s KRONOS project page · NANO Nuclear’s announcement

How the two projects differ
| Detail | NANO Nuclear KRONOS MMR / Illinois proposal | Project Pele |
|---|---|---|
| Lead or developer | NANO Nuclear technology; University of Illinois applicant and partner | DoD-led; manufactured by BWXT |
| Configuration in cited sources | Stationary, high-temperature gas-cooled research-reactor proposal | Mobile prototype microreactor transported in 20-foot containers |
| Power figure | 45 MWth, listed by the NRC; thermal rating | 1–5 MWe, stated by DOE; electrical-output range |
| Status and context | Construction permit application in NRC review | Demonstration and testing project at Idaho National Laboratory |
MWth and MWe measure different things: thermal power and electrical output, respectively. The figures above cannot be compared as if they were the same kind of capacity. The cited sources do not establish a KRONOS 5-MWe shipping-container product or a commercial unit available to customers.
What the NRC application status means
The University of Illinois submitted its KRONOS construction permit application on March 31, 2026, and NRC review is under way. An application being submitted or reviewed is a regulatory milestone; it does not mean the reactor has been built or is operating. The NRC’s 2026 highlights report the submission date, while the NRC project page tracks the proposal.

What this means for a prospective buyer or investor
Neither project should be treated as a household generator someone can order. Project Pele is a government-led prototype demonstration, while KRONOS is a stationary reactor under development in a university proposal that is in licensing review. The available sources establish project descriptions, stated ratings and regulatory context; they do not establish commercial availability, a consumer purchase price, or a guaranteed completion date.
