Anu and Satya Nadella and their family committed $15 million to Seattle Children’s Hospital, the hospital announced May 5, 2021. The commitment was intended to support precision medicine, clinical trials, mental-health initiatives and pediatric neuroscience, with the family’s experience receiving care for their son Zain informing the gift.
What will the Nadella family’s $15 million gift fund?
Seattle Children’s said the commitment would support four areas:
- Precision medicine: Attracting and retaining leaders in the field.
- Clinical trials: Building a clinical-trial program.
- Mental health: Expanding mental-health initiatives.
- Pediatric neuroscience: Establishing the Zain Nadella Endowed Chair in Pediatric Neurosciences.
The hospital presented the gift as support for equitable access to care and part of It Starts With Yes: The Campaign for Seattle Children’s. The campaign’s goal at the time was $1.35 billion; that figure was the stated goal, not a report of money raised.
Why did the Nadella family donate to Seattle Children’s?
The hospital described the family’s connection through Zain’s neonatal and ongoing specialized care at Seattle Children’s. In the announcement, Anu Nadella said, “As parents, our lives have been shaped by the needs of our children, and it is our hope that in honoring Zain’s journey, we can improve and innovate care for future generations in every community.”

CEO Dr. Jeff Sperring said the work would aim both to improve understanding of the developing brain and to expand young people’s access to mental-health services. The announcement also cited a comparison—one in four youth under 18 reporting suicidal ideation since the pandemic began, compared with one in 10 in 2018. That is a statistic reported in the hospital’s 2021 announcement, not a current prevalence estimate; the cited passage does not identify the underlying study.
What the announcement does—and does not—establish
The May 5, 2021 announcement establishes that the family made a $15 million commitment and describes its intended uses. It does not establish whether the full amount was later disbursed or report outcomes attributable to the gift.

Seattle Children’s later updated its family profile on March 4, 2022, reporting Zain’s death and describing memorial gifts that could support neuroscience, cerebral palsy care and research, mental healthcare, neonatal intensive care, and equitable access. Those later memorial gifts are separate from the $15 million commitment announced in 2021.
