Affiliate marketing lets you earn a commission by referring readers to a merchant through a tracked link. You earn only if a referral meets that program’s qualifying-action rules; publishing a link does not guarantee a sale or income. For beginners, the practical starting point is to choose an audience you can genuinely help, find programs that fit its needs, publish useful original content, disclose commercial relationships clearly, and follow each program’s current terms.
How affiliate marketing works
An affiliate publisher recommends a merchant’s product or service using a program-provided link. The link identifies the referral. If a reader follows it and completes an action the program recognizes—often a qualifying purchase—the publisher may receive compensation under that program’s rules.
Amazon Associates is one example: its Operating Agreement describes tagged “Special Links” and commissions for qualifying purchases, subject to the agreement and its incorporated policies. It is not a template for every affiliate program. Merchants and networks can define different qualifying actions, exclusions, attribution rules, and payment terms.
Think of a commission as conditional compensation, not a payment for every click. A reader may click without making a qualifying purchase, and a purchase may fail to qualify under the applicable terms. Review the live agreement for each program before promoting it.

How to start affiliate marketing
- Choose a subject and audience you can serve. Pick a topic where you can answer real questions with useful knowledge, research, or firsthand experience. A broad interest alone is not enough; define what readers need help deciding or doing.
- Find programs that fit that audience. Look at relevant merchants and affiliate networks, then read the current terms before applying or publishing links. Amazon Associates is one example, not a recommendation for every site.
- Check the rules that affect your plan. Compare the qualifying action, commission basis and exclusions, attribution or session rules, payout threshold and schedule, eligible promotional channels, geographic coverage, disclosure requirements, content and link restrictions, and termination or change provisions. If a term is unclear, do not assume it works like another program’s.
- Create content around reader tasks. Decide what would help someone understand a process, compare options, evaluate a product, or find a maintained set of resources. Add information that helps readers make a better-informed choice rather than simply inserting links.
- Disclose the relationship and mark links appropriately. Put a clear disclosure where readers will notice it near the recommendation, and use suitable link attributes on your site.
- Review the content and program terms periodically. Check that recommendations remain accurate, links still work, disclosures are visible, and the current program rules still permit your content and promotional channels.
This is a sensible workflow, not a guaranteed route to approval, traffic, sales, or income. No earnings or success rate can be promised from the information available here.
How to choose an affiliate program
Start with reader fit, then examine the operating details. A high headline commission would not make a program suitable if the product does not serve your audience or its rules do not fit your publishing channels.

- What triggers compensation? Identify the qualifying action and any exclusions; do not assume every order or referral counts.
- How is compensation calculated and paid? Read the basis for commissions, payout threshold, schedule, and any conditions that affect payment.
- How is a referral attributed? Check the program’s attribution and session rules rather than assuming a standard window.
- Where may you promote? Confirm the eligible channels and geographic coverage, as well as restrictions on how links or claims may be presented.
- What can change? Review the provisions on policy changes and termination, and make a habit of checking updated terms.
Amazon’s Associates Program is a concrete starting example for understanding tagged links and qualifying purchases. Amazon Associates Central’s Operating Agreement was updated October 15, 2025, and its policy-update page lists changes effective April 14, 2026. Those dates do not replace checking the current agreement and policies for operational details.
What content should a beginner publish?
Choose a format based on the reader’s task and what you can substantiate. Do not imply that you tested a product or used a service if you did not.

- Firsthand review: Use this when you have genuine experience to describe. Explain the relevant context and what readers should take from it.
- Comparison: Use this when you can document real alternatives and explain decision criteria that matter to the reader. Keep the distinctions factual and useful.
- Tutorial: Use this when readers need a process. Give clear steps and explain where a recommended product or service is relevant, if it is.
- Resource list: Use this when you can explain why each recommendation belongs and keep the list current.
Google Search Central describes “thin affiliation” as affiliate content that repeats merchant descriptions without original value. It points to additions such as original reviews, meaningful price information, comparisons, and navigation or features that help users choose. The useful test is whether the page contributes something beyond the merchant’s own product copy; no particular format guarantees search rankings.
How to disclose affiliate links
Tell readers about the commercial relationship clearly and close to the recommendation, where they are likely to see the disclosure before or as they encounter the link. A disclosure buried in a footer may not explain the link at the moment it matters.

For Amazon Associates, Amazon’s Operating Agreement requires this site statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Amazon’s help guidance also gives “(paid link),” “#ad,” and “#CommissionsEarned” as examples of link-level disclosures and advises placing disclosure near the link or review. These are Amazon-specific instructions and examples, not a determination that one phrase meets every legal requirement or every program’s rules.
For other programs, check the merchant’s disclosure requirements and applicable guidance for your jurisdiction and audience. The FTC’s Endorsement Guides FAQ raises the question of whether “affiliate link” alone is an adequate disclosure; the detailed answer is not established here, so do not treat that phrase by itself as a confirmed legal safe harbor.

How to mark affiliate links for search engines
Google recommends rel="sponsored" for paid placements, including compensated links. It says rel="nofollow" remains acceptable, while sponsored is preferred. These attributes complement—not replace—a reader-facing disclosure.
Use concise, descriptive anchor text that tells readers what they can expect at the destination. For example, name the product, service, or relevant merchant page when that accurately describes the link, rather than relying on vague text such as “click here.”

- The link and content comply with the program’s current terms and permitted-channel rules.
- Any claims about commissions, qualifying actions, availability, or payment are supported by that program’s current terms.
