A better choice depends on whether the transaction is a direct plan, how units are held, what support and grievance route is available, and whether you need personalized advice. Available primary-source information supports a comparison of Zerodha Coin, Groww, Kuvera and MF Central; it does not support ranking five private apps on comparable evidence.
What to compare before choosing a mutual-fund app
Compare the transaction and the service behind it, not just the brand or a “zero commission” claim. Verify the exact scheme, plan, holding format and relevant entity before investing.
- Plan type: Confirm that the specific transaction is for a direct plan if that is what you intend to buy.
- Holding format: Check whether units will be held in demat form or in an AMC folio, also called statement of account (SoA).
- Service and advice: Distinguish execution, education and monitoring features from personalized investment advice. If you want advice, verify the adviser’s registration.
- Verification and recourse: Check the relevant entity in SEBI’s intermediary directory and locate the complaint and escalation route before investing.
- Scope: Decide whether you need an investment app or a platform primarily for servicing and viewing holdings across mutual funds.
Direct plans are not a safety rating
Direct and regular plans belong to the same mutual-fund scheme and share its portfolio and fund manager, but their expense ratios differ. AMFI explains that a direct plan has no distributor involved in the transaction, while regular plans include distributor costs. See AMFI’s Direct Plan information and expense-ratio explanation.
“Direct” describes the plan and distribution arrangement. It does not guarantee an app’s security, a fund’s performance or that the fund suits you. AMFI says direct plans make sense for investors able to select funds themselves or willing to pay for advice from a SEBI-registered investment adviser. Read AMFI’s guidance on who may use a direct plan before deciding.

How the documented options differ
| Option | What the provider or official source describes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Zerodha Coin | Zerodha support describes commission-free direct plans, demat holdings, SIPs, STPs, SWPs and fund analysis. See Zerodha Coin support. | Confirm the holding format and transaction details suit you. Feature descriptions do not establish security or suitability. |
| Groww | Groww describes direct mutual-fund access and says customers can opt out of demat and hold through AMC folios (SoA). See Groww’s mutual-fund information. | Check the current onboarding flow and your chosen holding format; do not assume it from the app name. |
| Kuvera by CRED | Kuvera describes direct plans and planning and monitoring features. Its App Store listing says units are held directly with AMCs in the investor’s name and identifies Dreamplug Technologies Private Limited as publisher. See the App Store listing. | Verify the publisher and download source. Security wording in a listing is the provider’s claim, not an independent audit. |
| MF Central | AMFI lists MF Central as an online mutual-fund route; SEBI material describes it as a digital platform developed by CAMS and KFin Technologies for investment-related services. See SEBI’s circular. | Review its current terms and available services to see whether it supports the transaction or servicing task you need. |
| Official AMC route | Investing through an AMC’s official direct channel is an alternative category, not a fifth peer app in a verified ranking. Each AMC’s own route and features vary. | Confirm you are on the AMC’s official site or app and check the plan, scheme and holding details before transacting. |
These are documented descriptions, not a ranking: the available evidence does not compare five private apps on holding format, fees, advice, support and security. MF Central is useful to consider for mutual-fund servicing and related transactions, but compare its published services with the specific task you want to complete.
Are mutual-fund apps in India safe?
No comparable independent security audit for these named services is established here, so a definitive safe-or-unsafe verdict would go beyond the evidence. A provider’s statement that transactions are secure is not independent proof of its current technical safeguards. SEBI’s intermediary directory can help you check relevant regulated entities, but registration is not an endorsement of investment performance or a guarantee against cyber incidents.

Use these checks before and during investing:
- Verify the entity: Search the exact company or intermediary name and the relevant category in SEBI’s recognised-intermediary directory. A brand name alone may not identify the entity handling a service.
- Use an official download route: Start from the provider’s official website or a verified app-store publisher. Kuvera’s listing advises downloading through official stores.
- Find a route for complaints: Locate the provider’s grievance mechanism and escalation steps. SEBI’s investor support information explains available support options.
- Review every transaction: Check the AMC and scheme, direct or regular plan, bank mandate, holding format and confirmation. Do not infer these details from the app brand or a general commission claim.
- Stop if asked for secrets or device access: Do not share OTPs or passwords or grant remote access in response to an unsolicited request. Verify any concern through official channels.
- Check advice credentials: If you want personalized advice, verify the adviser under the relevant SEBI registration rather than treating app tools or fund suggestions as regulated advice. See SEBI’s investor information on investment advisers.
Avoid calling an app “SEBI-approved” unless the precise authorization and entity status have been verified. Directory inclusion for a regulated intermediary does not establish that every app feature is authorized or that an investment is suitable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which option fits your needs?
- You choose funds yourself and want direct plans: Compare whether each transaction offers the intended direct plan and whether you can manage the selection without personalized advice.
- You want demat holdings: Coin’s support material describes demat-format mutual-fund holdings. Check that this format fits your record-keeping and servicing preferences.
- You prefer AMC folios: Groww describes an option to opt out of demat, while Kuvera’s listing describes units held directly with AMCs in the investor’s name. Confirm the actual choice offered during your own transaction.
- You mainly need mutual-fund servicing: Compare the current services and terms on MF Central with the specific task you need to perform.
- You need personal recommendations: Seek advice from a properly registered adviser; do not assume that execution or planning features in an app constitute personalized regulated advice.
For a portfolio of any size, including ₹1 crore or more, the amount alone does not establish which platform is best. The relevant checks remain the transaction’s plan type, holding arrangement, service needs and the credentials of anyone providing advice.
