The timing and political backlash make damage to the brand a plausible part of the story, but the available figures cannot isolate a “Musk effect”: the Model Y transition, Tesla’s limited lineup and stronger competition also matter.
How far did Tesla sales fall?
The decline was steepest in the spring of 2025 and persisted across the full year. The figures below measure new registrations, not orders or deliveries, and cover different geographies, so the regional totals should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Period and geography | Tesla registrations | Market context |
|---|---|---|
| April 2025, EU, UK and EFTA | 7,261, down 49% from 14,228 in April 2024; ACEA figures reported by The Guardian on 27 May 2025. | EU battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales rose 27.8% year over year in April 2025, according to ACEA. |
| Full year 2025, Europe | 238,656, down 26.9% from 326,525 in 2024; ACEA-based figures reported by CnEVPost in 2026. | BYD registered 187,657 vehicles, up 268.6% year over year, in the same reported Europe comparison. |
| Full year 2025, EU only | 150,504, down 37.9% year over year; ACEA-based figures reported by CnEVPost in 2026. | This EU-only total is narrower than the Europe total above. |
The April comparison is striking because it sets Tesla against a growing electric-car market, rather than against a market in which buyers broadly abandoned EVs. Across the whole EU in the first half of 2025, ACEA recorded 869,271 new BEVs and a 15.6% BEV share of new-car registrations. Total EU car registrations were down 1.9% over that half-year, but BEVs grew.
Did Musk’s politics make Europeans stop buying Teslas?
They may have put some buyers off, but the evidence does not establish how many. Musk’s support for Donald Trump and vocal support for Germany’s AfD drew political backlash, including protests at Tesla showrooms, as The Guardian reported in May 2025. That made the company’s CEO unusually prominent in customers’ minds when choosing a car.

- Boy's model toy car: The body is made of alloy material, with exquisite paint craftsmanship and good durability.
- Realistic alloy model car: The 1:32 interior decoration is realistic, with six doors that can be opened. The steering wheel and seats have simulated designs.
- Toy car with lights and music: Opening the car door can light up the lights and simulate the sound of an engine starting. It's a toy car that boys like.
- Companion to Decoration and Cake Decorations: It plays a great decorative role on display cabinets at home and is a great decoration for boys' birthday cake parties.
- Gift selection for toy cars for boys aged 3-12: This gift is suitable for children aged 3 and above and is a collectible for car enthusiasts.
The timing, and Tesla’s divergence from the wider BEV market, are consistent with reputational damage. Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, said the decline “suggests the brand damage caused by Elon Musk’s political interventions may be lasting.” That is an analyst’s interpretation of the figures, not a controlled estimate of the number of lost sales caused by politics.
Musk offered a different account at the Qatar Economic Forum, saying Europe was Tesla’s weakest market and that it had “lost some sales paths on the [political] left” while it had “gained them on the right,” The Guardian reported on 27 May 2025. Neither his characterization nor the sales totals measure the net effect of those political shifts.

What else could explain Tesla’s decline?
Sales figures alone cannot divide the decline into precise causes. The main explanations reported alongside the registration data fit together rather than rule one another out.
The Model Y changeover and a narrow lineup
Tesla was transitioning to a refreshed Model Y in 2025. Reporting described the reception during the changeover as lukewarm, while the transition could also leave buyers waiting for the updated model. At the same time, analysts pointed to a limited lineup and Tesla’s lack of a hybrid option, a consideration for drivers who were not ready to switch fully to electric.

More alternatives for buyers
European, Chinese, Japanese and Korean manufacturers expanded the choices available to electric-car shoppers. BYD’s sharply higher 2025 European registrations alongside Tesla’s fall show that at least one competitor was gaining ground; those totals do not prove that every BYD sale replaced a Tesla sale.
A softer car market is not the whole answer
EU car registrations did decline in the first half of 2025, so general market weakness is part of the backdrop. But BEV registrations rose in that period, and the EU’s April BEV market grew as Tesla’s EU-UK-EFTA registrations dropped. Broad auto-market softness therefore cannot by itself account for Tesla’s much steeper fall.

Was Europe’s electric-car market also collapsing?
No. The available EU-wide figures show a growing BEV market, not a general retreat from battery-electric cars. In the first half of 2026, ACEA recorded 1,220,890 new BEV registrations in the EU; BEVs made up 20.7% of new registrations, up from 15.6% in the first half of 2025. Total EU registrations were up 5.7% year to date in ACEA’s H1 2026 reporting.
Those market figures do not show how Tesla performed in Europe during 2026. The latest Tesla-specific totals cited here cover full-year 2025, so the wider market’s recovery should not be mistaken for evidence that Tesla itself recovered.

What can the numbers tell a buyer or investor?
They establish a pronounced, brand-specific registration decline during a period when EU BEV demand was expanding. They also show competition gaining share and a product transition underway. They do not establish the portion of Tesla’s lost registrations attributable to Musk’s politics, nor do vehicle registrations alone determine Tesla’s financial performance or the future value of its shares.
Quick Recap
- For a car buyer: compare the vehicles, prices, charging needs and service arrangements available to you rather than treating market share as a verdict on an individual model.
- For an investor: separate the evidence of lower European registrations from explanations of why they fell. The registration figures support concern about brand and product competitiveness, but they are not a quantified estimate of political damage.
