MUFG Bank has completed a 20% investment in India’s Shriram Finance, but it has not announced a takeover or a decision to seek control. The possibility of a future acquisition comes from an Economic Times report citing unnamed people familiar with the matter—not from a confirmed agreement or official commitment.
What MUFG has acquired
MUFG Bank completed its acquisition of a 20.00% fully diluted interest in Shriram Finance on April 8, 2026, according to MUFG’s filing. The shares were newly issued through a preferential allotment. MUFG says Shriram Finance became an equity-method affiliate after the investment. That status and the 20% stake do not, by themselves, mean MUFG owns or controls the company. MUFG’s December 19, 2025 announcement described the proposed transaction; its later filing reported the closing. The April 8, 2026 filing states the completed holding.

The reported investment cost at closing was approximately ¥713.3 billion, including purchase consideration and acquisition-related costs, MUFG said. Its December 19 announcement had estimated the investment at approximately INR 396.2 billion, or approximately JPY 682.3 billion using the exchange-rate assumptions stated at the time. These are not identical measures: the earlier figure was an expected investment amount, while the later amount includes acquisition-related costs and reflects the closing disclosure.
Is MUFG taking control of Shriram Finance?
Not on the basis of the confirmed transaction. The Economic Times reported that the investment could pave the way for an eventual acquisition, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. That report describes a possible future path; it does not establish that MUFG has decided to take control, that the companies have agreed to a takeover, or that a control transaction has occurred. The report’s control-related claim should therefore be read separately from the official transaction disclosures.
#1 Best Overall
Four distinct elements help clarify the position:
- Ownership now: MUFG holds 20.00% on a fully diluted basis, according to its April 2026 filing.
- Board participation: MUFG said the deal includes the appointment of two directors to Shriram Finance’s board. Board seats provide governance involvement, but do not by themselves prove control.
- Strategic cooperation: The companies signed a memorandum of understanding concerning a proposed strategic partnership, as MUFG said in December 2025.
- Future control: The possibility is reported by the Economic Times based on unnamed sources; it is not an announced or agreed next step in the cited official disclosures.
How the deal progressed
- December 19, 2025: MUFG announced an agreement to subscribe to a preferential allotment representing a 20% equity interest. The transaction was subject to relevant regulatory approvals, and the companies signed an MOU on a proposed strategic partnership.
- March 25, 2026: India’s Competition Commission (CCI) announced approval of MUFG Bank’s acquisition of certain shares in Shriram Finance. The CCI approval notice records the regulatory step.
- April 8, 2026: MUFG reported that the acquisition had closed, giving it a 20.00% fully diluted holding and making Shriram Finance an equity-method affiliate.
Why MUFG says it invested
MUFG framed the investment as a way to build a stronger business base in India’s micro, small and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) and retail markets. It said the partnership is intended to support growth in new commercial-vehicle and MSME segments, strengthen funding capacity and profitability, and combine MUFG’s client network and banking know-how with Shriram Finance’s local presence and customer relationships. These are the companies’ stated aims, not demonstrated results of the investment.
What Shriram Finance does
Shriram Finance is a publicly listed, Reserve Bank of India-registered non-banking financial company, or NBFC. The CCI classifies it as an “NBFC-Upper Layer.” Its lending includes commercial and passenger vehicles, construction and farm equipment, MSMEs, two-wheelers, gold and personal loans. The CCI’s March 25, 2026 release describes the company and its lending categories. MUFG’s filing particularly highlights Shriram Finance’s used commercial- and passenger-vehicle lending and working capital for MSMEs and individual business owners in transportation.

What investors and customers should take from the news
The confirmed development is a substantial minority investment paired with board appointments and a proposed strategic partnership. The sources cited here do not establish a public offer, a takeover agreement, or a completed change of control. The Economic Times report points to a possible future acquisition, but its unnamed-source attribution is not equivalent to confirmation by MUFG, Shriram Finance or a regulator.
For borrowers, the announcement explains the companies’ intended strategic cooperation; it does not itself establish changes to loan eligibility, rates, servicing, or product availability. The cited transaction disclosures do not specify such customer-level changes.
