His answer was DrimTel, a telecommunications business built around a stated commitment to give 50% of its profits to Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF Australia.
What happened before Caterina’s diagnosis
In March 2021, Caterina was five and had no known family history of type 1 diabetes. Her parents knew little about the condition. In a 29 March 2025 interview with PerthNow, Taneski recalled that she became unusually thirsty and lethargic and began urinating frequently. She had been toilet trained, but suddenly wet herself at school.
A doctor found concerning blood glucose and very high ketones, and Caterina was taken to an emergency department. Taneski described the family’s confusion and self-questioning after the diagnosis: “You go through this blame game, thinking ‘did we do something wrong? Could we have prevented this?’”
He also recalled an unusual smell in the house that the family later understood was associated with ketones: “For a whole week, our house smelled like paint stripper. Turns out that was the ketones in her blood.” These are details from one family’s experience, not a diagnostic checklist.

How the family experience led to DrimTel
Taneski wanted to contribute to diabetes research and saw a connection between telecommunications and some of the technology used in diabetes management. PerthNow reported that Caterina used a continuous glucose monitor and insulin pump that relied on a mobile phone. That experience helped shape the idea for a cause-linked telco rather than a medical-device company.
“It just made sense — our daughter needs devices that rely on mobile connectivity. Why not create a telco that gives back?” Taneski told PerthNow. In Breakthrough T1D Australia’s 3 October 2023 launch announcement, he described the motivation as both personal and practical: “Following Caterina’s diagnosis, we recognised the technologies associated with managing T1D required telecommunication services. At the same time, we were considering how we could give back to Breakthrough T1D, and support research aimed at cures and improving lives.”

What DrimTel says about its donation
DrimTel launched in October 2023. PerthNow reported that half its profits had gone to JDRF since launch, while the organization’s launch announcement described Taneski’s commitment as donating 50% of profits. Breakthrough T1D’s current Buy with purpose partner page lists DrimTel and says 50% of profit from purchases goes to Breakthrough T1D.
The wording is about profits, not revenue, and does not establish a fixed donation from each customer’s bill. The published descriptions explain the company’s and partner organization’s stated arrangement; they do not provide audited accounts or enough detail to calculate a donation per purchase.

Breakthrough T1D’s 2023 announcement described DrimTel as offering mobile SIM-only, data-only and nbn plans to residential and business customers, using the Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network at that time. Those launch-era details are not confirmation of every current plan or network arrangement. Anyone considering a service should check DrimTel’s current terms, local coverage and the requirements of their particular device. A telco connection by itself does not guarantee that a medical device will work.

Taneski told PerthNow: “Our primary goal is to contribute to research to find the cure for type one diabetes.” The article also quoted Sydney Yovic, identified at the time as JDRF CEO, saying the partnership would help advance the organization’s goals. The organization is now branded Breakthrough T1D Australia; its 2023 announcement identified it as formerly JDRF Australia.

PerthNow’s 2025 article attributed these figures to Diabetes Australia: more than 135,000 Australians were living with type 1 diabetes, and eight people were diagnosed each day. It also reported an estimate of around 25,000 people in early stages of the condition who had not yet been diagnosed, without identifying the estimate’s original publication year. These are figures reported in that 2025 article, not live counts.
The story also mentioned DrimTel’s partnership with Perth Glory and Taneski’s participation in One Walk activity. PerthNow reported that 3,572 participants raised $756,676 across more than 38 One Walk events held that month in March 2025. These are historical event figures, not a current fundraising total.

What the story means for customers
DrimTel’s stated giving arrangement makes it a cause-linked business: customers may choose to consider the company’s services alongside ordinary factors such as price, coverage and device compatibility. The available descriptions do not show that choosing a particular plan directly improves an individual’s diabetes care, nor do they establish a customer-level donation amount. Taneski’s account is ultimately about turning a family’s response to a difficult diagnosis into a business commitment to support research.
