Mt. Gox’s rehabilitation trustee began repaying some creditors in Bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) in July 2024, but that does not mean every former customer will receive Bitcoin. Repayment depends on the creditor’s repayment category, completed procedures, account checks and other processing requirements. The trustee’s deadline for Base, Early Lump-Sum and Intermediate Repayments is October 31, 2026, Japan time.
What the Mt. Gox repayment news means
Mt. Gox’s trustee, Nobuaki Kobayashi, announced on June 24, 2024 that repayments in BTC and BCH under the rehabilitation plan would begin in early July. The trustee said it was preparing technical safeguards, addressing financial-regulation requirements in different countries and coordinating with exchanges. The June 24, 2024 announcement describes a rehabilitation process, not a blanket promise that every former customer will receive BTC.
Repayments began in July 2024 through designated cryptocurrency exchanges. Other creditors’ payments depended on steps including validating registered accounts, completing required procedures, and confirming that exchanges would accept the relevant arrangements and that payments could be made safely. A creditor’s claim and repayment category therefore matter; the headlines alone cannot establish whether a particular person has been paid or will be paid in Bitcoin.
How many creditors have received BTC and BCH?
The trustee reported that more than 13,000 rehabilitation creditors had received BTC and BCH by July 16, 2024, following repayments on July 5 and July 16. On March 27, 2025, it reported that the cumulative number of creditors paid in BTC and BCH had passed 19,500. Both figures are trustee-reported milestones as of their respective dates; neither is an October 2026 count. The July 16, 2024 notice and the March 27, 2025 notice also describe outstanding processing steps for other creditors.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The available notices do not establish how many creditors remain unpaid as of October 8, 2026, the total value distributed, or what recipients did with assets received. Avoid treating an older cumulative payment count as a current update.
What the October 31, 2026 deadline covers
On October 27, 2025, the trustee said it had largely completed Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment for creditors who had completed the required procedures and had no repayment-process issues. It also said many creditors had not been paid because their procedures were incomplete, while a considerable number had encountered processing issues.

With court permission, the trustee extended the deadline for those three repayment categories from October 31, 2025 to October 31, 2026, Japan Standard Time. The extension is not a promise of payment by that date to every claimant: eligibility, completion of procedures and resolution of processing problems remain relevant. Read the trustee’s October 27, 2025 announcement for the stated categories and deadline.
Crypto repayments and cash repayments are different routes
The trustee’s March 2025 notice described BTC and BCH repayments through designated exchanges as well as cash repayments made from proceeds of BTC and BCH sales to some qualifying creditors. Those are distinct forms of repayment; the notices do not establish that every creditor can freely choose between them now.

| Route described by the trustee | What it involves | What the notices establish |
|---|---|---|
| BTC and BCH repayment | Cryptocurrency delivered through designated exchanges | Repayment began in July 2024; account validation, creditor procedures, exchange acceptance and safe processing affected payment. |
| Cash repayment | Cash from proceeds of BTC and BCH sales | The trustee said it was paying some qualifying creditors this way; the notice does not establish that this route is open to every creditor or freely selectable. |
For an individual claim, check the creditor-specific instructions and notices rather than assuming a route or exchange can still be selected. A named exchange’s support page may explain its historical role, but does not by itself show that it accepts new repayment instructions.
What creditors should check now
- Use official case channels. Start with the Mt. Gox trustee homepage and the creditor system for case-specific notices and inquiries.
- Review your own repayment status and requirements. Confirm your repayment category, whether all required procedures were completed, and whether the trustee or relevant exchange has identified an account or processing issue.
- Do not infer a new choice from past notices. The trustee’s notices describe designated exchanges and cash payments to some qualifying creditors, but do not say that every creditor can choose a route or newly nominate an exchange.
- Check jurisdiction-specific tax obligations. The trustee has published a tax-filing and payment notice for creditors residing in Japan. That notice does not settle tax treatment for other jurisdictions or an individual’s circumstances; seek current, qualified advice where you live.
Protect yourself from repayment scams
The trustee warns that fraudulent websites and emails may impersonate MTGOX or the trustee, and cautions creditors against giving information to unauthorized websites. Follow links from the official trustee homepage rather than from unsolicited messages. Do not provide creditor credentials or personal information to a site until you have independently confirmed it is an authorized channel. The trustee homepage carries the relevant warnings.
