That means an estimated 20% shortfall for MSI—not an 80% collapse in Nvidia’s total GPU output. The planned increases are not a confirmed 30% hike on every product, and actual prices depend on the model, market and retailer.
What MSI said about 2026 prices
At an investor briefing on March 13, 2026, MSI general manager Huang Jinqing reportedly said the company expected gaming-product prices to rise by approximately 15% to 30% during 2026. Tom’s Hardware reported the range and attributed it to MSI management. Tom’s Hardware’s account of MSI’s plan does not establish a new price for every SKU or show that the full increase has already reached retail shelves.
The reported scope extends beyond graphics cards to gaming laptops, desktop systems, motherboards and other gaming hardware. Component costs, product margins and regional pricing differ, so the range is a company-level expectation—not a uniform increase that buyers should apply to every MSI item. No product-by-product price schedule is established in the available reporting.
A planned manufacturer increase and a higher checkout price are different things. Retail prices also reflect existing inventory, promotions, seller mix, local taxes and supply in a particular market. A card selling above its reference price does not, by itself, prove MSI changed that card’s official price.

What “80% of Nvidia GPU supply” means
MSI’s reported figure describes how much of the Nvidia GPU quantity it wants or needs it expects to receive: about four-fifths. The implied gap is around one-fifth of MSI’s requirement. It is not evidence that Nvidia’s total global gaming-GPU production fell by 80%. VideoCardz’s report also frames the figure as a shortfall relative to demand.
This is an attributed estimate about MSI’s allocation, not a publicly audited Nvidia production statistic. Availability can vary by GPU model, memory configuration, region, board partner and quarter. A supply shortfall can also coexist with cards in stores: stock may be concentrated in premium models, expensive listings or particular sellers rather than the configurations buyers are seeking.
How higher component costs can reach buyers
Memory affects more than graphics cards
MSI-linked reporting identifies memory inflation as a major cost pressure. DRAM affects system memory in laptops and desktops, while GDDR6 and GDDR7 are used as graphics memory in different GPU generations. Higher memory costs can therefore affect a gaming PC’s parts list in several places, not just its graphics card.

Reports citing MSI described a 16GB DDR5 module rising from roughly $40 to $170–$200 over a year. Treat those figures as reporting about a particular market and period, not a universal current price for every module. PCWorld also links MSI’s planned increases to the memory crunch: PCWorld’s coverage.

Reported Nvidia GPU-kit price increases
Supply-chain reporting says Nvidia raised the cost of GPU kits supplied to add-in-board partners. Those kits are inputs for companies such as MSI, which build finished cards with their own boards, cooling, power delivery and assembly. If an input cost rises, a partner may pass some of it on, absorb it, reduce discounts or change which models it prioritizes. The size and timing of any pass-through are not automatic.
PC Gamer’s report says the adjustments affect products using both GDDR7 and GDDR6, potentially reaching newer RTX 50-series cards and some older products: PC Gamer’s account of the reported kit-price changes. This is supply-chain reporting; the available evidence does not provide Nvidia’s public wholesale price schedule or an official confirmation of exact changes.

Allocation and demand add uncertainty
GPU silicon, graphics memory, advanced packaging, partner allocation and finished-card inventory are separate links in the supply chain. Industry demand for AI and data-center products can compete for some capacity and resources, but it is not established as the sole reason gaming GPUs are constrained—or as proof that Nvidia is deliberately withholding them. MSI’s reported allocation shortfall, memory costs and reported kit pricing together point to overlapping pressures rather than one complete explanation.
What retail-price reporting shows—and what it does not
For the United States, Tom’s Hardware reported in August 2026 that tracked RTX 50-series median prices on Newegg had risen by as much as 39% relative to reference prices. Its reported figures included about 36% for the RTX 5070 and 27% for the RTX 5060. These are retail-tracking results for a particular market and sample, not official MSI price changes or a guarantee that every listing moved by the same amount. Tom’s Hardware’s August 2026 price analysis provides the figures and its tracking context.
A median listing price can move when lower-priced stock sells out or the mix of sellers changes. Marketplace offers, shipping charges, promotions ending and stock availability can all alter what a buyer sees. PC Gamer’s year-long tracking also described August 2026 as a particularly unfavorable time for GPU affordability, but that assessment reflects its tracking project rather than a universal measure for every country or retailer: PC Gamer’s price-tracking account.

China has separate evidence: Tom’s Hardware reported distributor-price increases of up to 59% for some MSI and Colorful RTX 50-series cards. That regional distributor evidence is not interchangeable with US shelf prices; taxes, currency, distribution and local pricing policies differ. Tom’s Hardware’s China report concerns that market specifically.
Which products could feel the pressure most?
Exposure depends on a product’s components, supply and position in the market. Higher memory costs and tighter allocations may be more consequential for products with expensive memory configurations or scarce GPUs, but no product is guaranteed to rise by a particular amount.
- Current-generation and premium graphics cards: GDDR7 models, cards with larger memory capacities, high-end GPUs and premium cooler designs can face several cost pressures at once.
- Older and entry-level cards: The reported kit-cost changes may also affect products using GDDR6, so an older generation or lower tier is not automatically insulated.
- Gaming laptops and desktops: These combine discrete graphics with system memory and other components, making their final price sensitive to more than the GPU alone.
- Existing retailer inventory: Stock acquired earlier may not reflect newer wholesale costs immediately, while a technically in-stock listing may be expensive or sold by a marketplace seller.
- Alternatives: AMD-based systems and used cards may offer different value, but general memory, retail and logistics costs can affect them too. No category is proven immune.
How to decide whether to buy now or wait
Buy now when the purchase solves a real need
If a current PC cannot handle work, school or the games you want to play, compare the exact model’s price with other current listings and decide whether it fits your budget and performance needs. Favor a clearly identified seller with a return policy and warranty you understand. A time-sensitive need can justify buying at today’s price; the reported forecast alone cannot tell you how prices will move next.

Wait when your current system is adequate
If your GPU still meets your needs, waiting avoids paying a scarcity premium based only on fear of a future increase. Be cautious about marketplace listings that are far above comparable authorized-retailer offers. If you can use integrated graphics, an interim card or another option, you have more room to compare rather than buying under pressure.
Compare equivalent prices, not headlines
For the same model and condition, check the original reference price, MSI’s own listed price if available, an authorized retailer’s current price and any marketplace offer separately. Note the seller, shipping, warranty and return terms. A board-partner card may cost more than a reference design because of its cooler and board, while a high marketplace listing is not proof of an official manufacturer increase.
Compare alternatives on the work you actually do
AMD Radeon cards, previous-generation GPUs, complete prebuilts and used cards may be worth considering, but compare exact products rather than brands or headline prices. Check performance in your games and applications, resolution, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, VRAM, power use, warranty and total system cost. A prebuilt is not automatically cheaper once its CPU, memory, SSD, power supply, cooling and warranty are considered.
For a used card, check buyer protection, return terms, warranty transferability, condition and the seller’s history. Possible problems include worn fans or thermal pads, modified firmware, undisclosed heavy use and scams. A lower price is useful only if the risk and lack of recourse are acceptable to you.

What could change the outlook?
Prices could ease if memory supply improves, Nvidia allocates more GPUs to gaming partners, retailer inventory normalizes or consumer demand weakens. New product launches and economic conditions can also shift demand and stock. The cited reporting does not establish a date when prices will normalize, so buyers should treat the 2026 forecast as a warning about cost pressure rather than a calendar for when to purchase.
