On January 29, 2025, MSI said its official U.S. store would accept RTX 5090 preorders from January 30 at 6 a.m. Pacific time, but shipments would begin February 6 because launch-day stock was unavailable through that channel. NVIDIA’s overall RTX 5090 launch still occurred on January 30.
What MSI actually delayed
The delay applied to fulfillment through MSI’s official U.S. online store:
- Preorders opened January 30, 2025, at 6 a.m. PST.
- MSI scheduled shipments to begin February 6, 2025.
- The store did not have RTX 5090 units available for immediate launch-day shipment.
The February 6 date was a shipping date, not a guaranteed customer-delivery date. MSI’s update was reported from its official Discord rather than a conventional newsroom press release. VideoCardz reported the announcement and schedule.
The RTX 5090 itself launched on January 30
NVIDIA announced that the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 were “out now” on January 30, 2025. The launch included partner-board models and limited Founders Edition availability through Best Buy. That means three different events should not be confused:

| Event | Date or status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Overall NVIDIA launch | January 30, 2025 | The RTX 5090 became officially available for sale. |
| MSI U.S. store preorder opening | January 30 at 6 a.m. PST | Customers could place orders, but not receive immediate shipment. |
| MSI U.S. store shipment start | February 6, 2025 | MSI planned to begin dispatching confirmed preorders. |
NVIDIA’s launch announcement also identified other board partners and limited Founders Edition supply. A shortage at one manufacturer’s store therefore was not a global release delay.
Why stock was limited
MSI said its available RTX 5090 inventory did not support immediate fulfillment through its U.S. store. The company accepted preorders against confirmed inventory instead of listing cards as ready to ship. NVIDIA had separately warned that shortages were likely and said it was working to send additional inventory daily.

- SFF-Ready Enthusiast GeForce Card
- Axial-tech fans feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
That evidence does not establish a single factory, wafer, logistics, or allocation problem as the cause. The defensible conclusion is narrower: MSI lacked enough launch-day stock for its own U.S. channel, while demand for the flagship Blackwell card was exceptionally high. Contemporary reporting documents MSI’s stock statement.
Could anyone buy an RTX 5090 on January 30?
Potentially, yes—but availability depended on the retailer, model, and timing. Other stores could receive limited quantities, and Tom’s Hardware reported expectations of intense competition, queues, and scalpers. Rival retailers having a few cards did not mean broad supply, and another retailer’s inventory was separate from MSI’s own store allocation.

What a buyer had to weigh
- Certainty versus speed: an MSI preorder offered a place in a confirmed-inventory queue, while a retailer launch attempt might ship sooner but could sell out immediately.
- Model versus availability: waiting for a preferred cooler or factory-overclocked model could mean missing every available card.
- Price versus urgency: a markup might secure a card sooner, but scarcity made overpayment more likely.
- System compatibility: check case clearance, power-supply capacity, connector requirements, airflow, and radiator space, especially for liquid-cooled cards.
Why the RTX 5080 comparison matters
MSI’s schedule treated the two launch GPUs differently. RTX 5080 orders were also scheduled to open January 30 at 6 a.m. PST, with immediate shipment planned that day. RTX 5090 orders were preorder-only with a February 6 ship date. That contrast points to a product-specific RTX 5090 inventory constraint, not a blanket MSI postponement of the RTX 50-series.
What happened to prices after the scheduled ship date
The February 6 date did not instantly restore normal pricing. On February 6, 2025, TechSpot reported higher prices on several MSI models while inventory remained unavailable:

- Memory Interface: 256-bit
- Output: DisplayPort x 3 (v2.1a) / HDMI 2.1b x 1
- Digital maximum resolution: 7680 x 4320
| Model | Reported price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| MSI RTX 5090 Ventus 3X | $2,379 | Reported increase from the $1,999 NVIDIA reference MSRP. |
| MSI RTX 5090 Vanguard SOC Launch Edition | $2,689 | Observed MSI pricing reported at that time. |
| MSI RTX 5090 Suprim Liquid SOC | $2,789 | Observed model price, not a universal MSI price. |
These were contemporary listings, not proof that MSI permanently raised every RTX 5090 price. The $1,999 figure is NVIDIA’s reference MSRP; partner designs, retailer margins, promotions, tax, shipping, and resale markups can differ. TechSpot reported the February price examples.

- Compare authorized retailers rather than assuming MSI’s store is the only route.
- Separate the advertised price from tax, shipping, warranty terms, return policy, and seller identity.
- Avoid treating “preorder” or “notify me” as a guaranteed delivery commitment.
- Check the card’s dimensions, power requirements, connector arrangement, and cooling design before paying.
- If the markup is unacceptable and the upgrade is not urgent, waiting for restocks may be safer than buying from a scalper or unverified marketplace seller.
NVIDIA positioned the RTX 5090 as its flagship consumer Blackwell GPU. Its launch materials cite 92 billion transistors, more than 3,352 trillion AI operations per second, up to twice the RTX 4090’s performance in NVIDIA’s workloads, and DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation. Those are NVIDIA specifications and claims, not independent test results. NVIDIA’s product announcement provides the stated specifications.

Retrospective: the situation in 2026
February 6, 2025 is a historical shipment date, not a current release schedule. On August 18, 2026, MSI’s U.S. RTX 5090 page showed several variants with “Notify Me” controls and warned that notification does not guarantee availability or price. Examples displayed then included $4,299.99 for the Ventus 3X OC, $4,499.99 for the Suprim SOC, and $4,599.99 for the Suprim Liquid SOC. These were time-stamped page observations, subject to change by model, region, inventory, and promotion—not stable market prices. Check MSI’s current store page before relying on any listing.
