Mr. Cooper shut down certain systems after detecting unauthorized access on October 31, 2023. The shutdown temporarily blocked many borrowers from their accounts and payment channels. The company later said files containing personal information had been obtained, with information relating to substantially all current and former customers. Here is what the company and public filings say about the disruption, the data involved, and the response.
What happened at Mr. Cooper?
Mr. Cooper Group, a major mortgage servicer, said it detected unauthorized access on October 31, 2023, and shut down certain systems as a precaution while it responded. Its November 9, 2023 filing described the incident as an unauthorized access event; the reviewed filings do not identify the attacker, motive, entry method, or ransomware as the attack type. The customer notice described unauthorized access between October 30 and November 1, 2023, and said files containing personal information were obtained. That window is distinct from the October 31 date on which the company said it detected the incident. Customer notice of data breach.
When were systems unavailable, and what services were affected?
Mr. Cooper’s amended SEC filing said systems were inaccessible from November 1 through November 4, 2023, leaving many customers unable to access their accounts or make payments. On November 4, the company restarted servicing operations, including taking customer calls and payments, remitting to investors, and onboarding loans. It also said origination systems were expected to become fully operational shortly after vendor and agency connectivity was restored. SEC filing.

Fannie Mae separately reported a downstream reporting delay: it had not received some loan-activity reports from Mr. Cooper for the last few days of the October reporting cycle, including payoffs and payment corrections. Fannie Mae said unreported prepayments would be distributed to mortgage-backed securities certificateholders on the first distribution date after the information was received and reconciled. What personal information was involved?
The customer notice listed these types of information in impacted files: names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and bank account numbers. The list describes categories present in the files, not proof that every affected person’s file contained every category. Customer notice.

In its 2023 annual report, filed in 2024, the company later said an unauthorized third party obtained personal information relating to substantially all current and former customers. What did Mr. Cooper tell borrowers about missed payments?
The company said customers would not face late fees or penalties, or negative credit reporting, for late payments caused by the incident. This assurance addressed delays attributable to the outage; it is not a general statement about payment obligations or unrelated late payments. SEC filing.

What identity-protection help did the company offer?
The December 2023 notice described no-cost single-bureau credit monitoring and fraud assistance through Cyberscout and Identity Force, a TransUnion company. It said enrollment had to occur within 90 days of the letter and that monitoring alerts continued for 24 months after enrollment. Those were historical enrollment instructions, not evidence that the same sign-up process remains open today. The notice also said that, at the time it was issued, the company had no evidence the recipient’s information had been misused for identity theft or fraud; that dated statement does not establish that misuse never occurred or determine whether any individual’s data was affected. What is known about litigation?
Mr. Cooper’s 2024 annual report, filed in 2025, described consolidated putative class-action litigation. It reported that 26 additional putative class actions had been consolidated with the Cabezas case through February 7, 2024. The filing said the company filed a motion to dismiss the consolidated complaint on September 13, 2024, and that its reply was due March 27, 2025.
