In April 2000, Motorola Inc. announced plans to acquire Hyundai Electronics Industries’ semiconductor site in Dunfermline, Scotland, and invest about $2.1 billion there over five years. That figure was the planned total investment, including acquisition and equipping—not a confirmed purchase price. The companies did not disclose a definitive price in the main announcement.

What Motorola announced in April 2000

Motorola said on 20 April 2000 that it planned to acquire Hyundai Electronics Industries Co. Ltd.’s semiconductor manufacturing site in Dunfermline. Hyundai’s announcement, published two days later, confirmed that it would transfer ownership of the facility to Motorola. EDN’s contemporary report described the plan as an approximately $2.1 billion investment over five years, also reported at the time as about £1.3 billion.

The figure covered the planned investment at the site, including acquisition and equipping. It should not be read as the amount paid to Hyundai for the property. EDN reported that the purchase price had not been disclosed; another contemporary report mentioned a possible price of about $160 million but said neither company confirmed it. That unconfirmed estimate is not an established sale price.

What the Dunfermline facility was intended to do

The site was a large semiconductor-fab shell that Hyundai had planned to use for a DRAM complex. Hyundai suspended that project in 1998 amid an industry downturn. Motorola’s announced plan was to equip the Dunfermline facility for 8-inch wafer processing, making integrated circuits for mobile communications. The original report described the property as 150 acres, with a fab shell exceeding one million square feet. Those site dimensions are contemporaneous reported figures.

  • ✨✅ Excellent thermal conductivity and insulation: - High thermal conductivity (≈60 W/m·K) to ensure rapid heat dissipation, while with excellent electrical insulation, to ensure the safe operation of precision instruments.
  • ✨✅ Super corrosion resistance: - Resist acid, alkali, molten metal erosion, prolong equipment life, reduce maintenance costs.
  • ✨✅ Precision machining · Multiple specifications optional: - High purity (99%+) boron nitride sintering, smooth surface, support customized diameter (5mm-100mm) and length (100mm-300mm), to meet the needs of diverse scenarios.
  • ✨✅ Multi-functional industrial applications: - Ideal for semiconductor wafer fabrication, vacuum coating fixtures, high-temperature lubrication coatings, neutron absorption in nuclear reactors, etc.

Why Hyundai agreed to transfer the site

Hyundai said the disposal was intended to improve investment efficiency and strengthen the competitiveness of its semiconductor business. It planned to use the proceeds to improve its financial structure and support upgrades for next-generation products. The announcement said discussions involved Hyundai, Motorola, Scottish Enterprise, Locate in Scotland and the Scottish Executive. Hyundai’s 22 April announcement provides its account of the transaction.

What the announcement did—and did not—promise

Contemporary coverage projected 1,350 additional jobs over five years. That was an expectation attached to the project, not a confirmed later employment total. Similarly, the plan to equip the site for production does not by itself establish when manufacturing began or how much output the fab ultimately achieved.

In the announcement, Motorola semiconductor executive Bill Walker said the company’s history of semiconductor manufacturing in Scotland would help it establish Dunfermline as a leader in productivity and cost effectiveness. Locate in Scotland director David Macdonald welcomed the sale and described it as an opportunity for further high-quality employment. These were statements of expectation at the time, not evidence of later results.

Is this a current Motorola deal?

No. The transaction described here was announced in 2000 by Motorola Inc. It is not a new 2026 acquisition. Current Motorola Solutions material describes public-safety and enterprise-security operations, including an Edinburgh technology office; it does not announce a renewed semiconductor-fab purchase in Scotland. Motorola Solutions’ company overview concerns its current business, not the historical Dunfermline project.

The available contemporary announcements establish the proposed acquisition and investment, but they do not establish the final amount Motorola spent, whether all the planned equipment was installed, whether production began, how many jobs materialized, or what later became of the site’s semiconductor operations. A current UK semiconductor-sector study provides broader industry context, but does not resolve the Dunfermline facility’s operating history. The UK sector study should not be treated as a record of this site’s subsequent operations.
