There is no verified current sales ranking of Costco’s most popular products in every state in the available data. The closest state-by-state snapshot is CouponBirds’ March 2024 analysis of online discussion: it named Kirkland paper towels as the national discussion leader and found Goodles Cheddy Mac White Cheddar Shells among the leading products in four states.
That distinction matters: the ranking measures social-media attention, not what shoppers bought most often. The state results below are a food-only selection from a later summary, not a complete list of each state’s top Costco product.
What the ranking measures—and what it does not
CouponBirds says it reviewed 50 popular Costco-related hashtags and approximately 15,000 posts across Facebook, Reddit, X (then Twitter) and Instagram during one week in March 2024. It ranked overall products by number of comments; for state-level results, it says it used location-based comments and Google Trends. CouponBirds’ methodology and findings do not provide detailed state-by-state sample sizes or explain how those inputs were weighted.
As a result, “popular” here means prominent in that short online-discussion sample. It does not establish sales volume, broad state preference, product quality, value, current availability or what Costco shoppers are buying now. The results should be read as a dated snapshot, not a purchasing guide.

Food products named in the state results
The Daily Meal’s September 2024 follow-up selected 15 food-related findings from the CouponBirds state results. It omitted states where no food item appeared among the top-mentioned products or where it had no applicable survey data. The table is that food-only subset, not a full ranking for all 50 states.

National and non-food findings
In CouponBirds’ analysis, Kirkland paper towels were the only product with more than 1,100 mentions in a week, making them the national discussion leader in that sample. The source also reported 1,089 mentions for gold bars in one week. Those are publisher-reported online mentions, not audited purchase counts.
CouponBirds said 19 of its 30 leading products were Kirkland brand. The result does not mean Kirkland products accounted for that share of Costco sales; it describes the brand mix in the analysis’s list. A separate CBS Detroit report on Michigan named Kirkland French Vodka, Sanders Small Batch Wonders Sea Salt Caramel, Kirkland Maple Syrup, Woozoo Globe Fan, Reese’s Dipped Animal Crackers and Costco Gas. That mix includes non-food items, illustrating why the food-only state table is incomplete as an all-product ranking. CBS Detroit’s April 2024 report summarizes the Michigan results and national findings.

How to use this list as a shopper
Treat a state label as an indication that a product drew attention in the source’s dataset, not as evidence that it is a local bestseller or a better buy. Before making a shopping decision, check the product’s current availability and price at your warehouse; neither is established by these discussion rankings. The data also cannot tell you whether a product suits your budget, household needs or preferences.
