For U.S. model-year 2025 cars, the Mazda MX-5 Miata has the lowest well-supported starting MSRP in the available manufacturer information: Mazda listed the soft top at $29,830 in a September 3, 2025 update. The Subaru BRZ starts at $33,210, while the Nissan Z starts at $42,970 before destination and handling. The Toyota GR86 and Ford Mustang EcoBoost also belong in the comparison, but their prices here come from secondary sources, so this is not a definitive all-market ranking.
These are manufacturer’s suggested retail prices, not guaranteed sale prices. Trim, transmission, destination charges, the date a price was announced, and local inventory all affect what a buyer may pay.
How to read these 2025 sports-car prices
This comparison is limited to new U.S. model-year 2025 cars and uses stated starting prices. It does not establish a single, fully verified price ranking across every sports car on sale. Manufacturer prices are strongest for the Miata, BRZ and Z; the GR86 and Mustang figures below are secondary-source references.
- MSRP is not an out-the-door price. Taxes, registration, dealer charges, options and, where specified, destination can raise the total.
- A starting price describes a base configuration. A different trim may be necessary for a preferred transmission or equipment.
- Timing matters. Mazda revised its 2025 Miata price during the model year, and the change did not apply to certain already-labeled inventory.
- Local sale prices are not established here. Regional inventory and dealer pricing can differ from MSRP.
2025 starting prices at a glance
| Model | Starting price and basis | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| Mazda MX-5 Miata | $29,830 | Mazda’s September 3, 2025 update lists the 2025 soft top starting at this MSRP. Mazda said the adjustment did not affect existing dealer inventory, fleet vehicles or port vehicles already carrying window labels. Mazda North American Operations |
| Subaru BRZ | $33,210 | Premium starting price on Subaru’s 2025 model-year comparison sheet. Subaru of America |
| Toyota GR86 | $31,135–$31,200 | Two secondary references differ: AP’s Edmunds-supplied comparison gives $31,135; Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 page displays $31,200. Official Toyota base MSRP is not established by the source set. AP/Edmunds; Kelley Blue Book |
| Ford Mustang EcoBoost coupe | $33,515 | AP’s Edmunds-supplied article lists this as the 2025 coupe starting price; it is a secondary reference, not an official Ford release in this source set. AP/Edmunds |
| Nissan Z | $42,970 | 2025 Sport MSRP before $1,295 destination and handling, according to Nissan. Nissan |
The GR86’s displayed range reflects conflicting secondary-source figures, not a verified price interval or dealer-price range. The prices also have different source bases and dates, so small differences should not be treated as a precise ranking without checking the relevant vehicle’s window sticker.

What each car offers at its entry price
Mazda MX-5 Miata: lowest verified entry price, with a roadster layout
Mazda’s September 2025 update puts the 2025 soft-top Miata at $29,830. The earlier December 5, 2024 announcement listed the Sport 6MT soft top at $29,530; that is a historical announced price, not the later updated starting price. Buyers looking at existing dealer, fleet or port inventory with a window label should distinguish that vehicle from newly priced inventory because Mazda said those vehicles were unaffected by the September adjustment. Mazda’s December 2024 pricing announcement.
Mazda specifies a 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 181 horsepower. Sport and Club are manual-only; Grand Touring offers a six-speed automatic option. The RF starts at $37,850 in Mazda’s September 2025 update, so shoppers comparing roof styles should not assume the soft-top entry price applies to it.

Subaru BRZ: a coupe with official prices across three trims
Subaru’s 2025 comparison sheet lists the BRZ Premium at $33,210, Limited at $35,860 and tS at $38,360. Subaru specifies a 2.4-liter BOXER four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The automatic transmission is optional on Limited and unavailable on Premium and tS, so the base price does not describe an automatic-equipped BRZ.
Subaru describes the BRZ layout as a “two-door, front engine, rear-wheel drive” car. Subaru BRZ. As a coupe rather than an open-top roadster, it is a different body-style choice from the Miata; the figures here do not establish a direct cargo or passenger-space comparison.

Toyota GR86: relevant alternative, but its official base price is unresolved here
The GR86 is a close comparison for shoppers considering a rear-wheel-drive coupe, but two secondary references give different 2025 starting figures: $31,135 in AP’s Edmunds-supplied comparison and $31,200 on Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 page. The official Toyota page did not provide readable price detail in the available source set, so neither number should be presented as verified official Toyota MSRP.
Ford Mustang EcoBoost: a higher-output coupe reference
AP’s Edmunds-supplied article lists a 2025 Mustang coupe starting at $33,515 and describes a 315-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder. Treat the price as a secondary-source reference rather than an official Ford price verified here. It is close to the BRZ’s base price in the listed figures, but output alone does not make the cars equivalent in size, configuration or buying cost.

Nissan Z: substantially higher starting tier, with a 400-hp V6
Nissan lists the 2025 Z Sport at $42,970 before $1,295 destination and handling. Its higher trims are the Performance at $52,970 and NISMO at $65,750, also before that charge. Nissan specifies a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with 400 horsepower for the Sport; the release lists manual and automatic configurations for Sport and Performance. These prices place the Z well above the Miata and BRZ entry figures, before delivery charges or options.

Start with the configuration you would actually buy rather than the lowest number in a list. If an automatic is essential, the Miata’s Sport and Club trims are not candidates, and the BRZ automatic is limited to the Limited trim in Subaru’s chart. If you want the Miata RF roof, Mazda’s updated starting figure is $37,850 rather than the soft-top entry price. For the Z, add the stated $1,295 destination and handling charge to the MSRP before comparing it with prices that may or may not include delivery.

Then compare the vehicle’s window sticker and a written dealer quote. The MSRP figures above do not tell you whether a particular dealer adds a markup, offers a discount, or has the configuration you want in stock. This source set does not establish transaction prices, financing costs, insurance costs or ownership expenses, so those should be evaluated separately in a personal budget.
