A November report put its estimated creditor liabilities at $249 million, but that was a provisional figure—not a final debt total or a statement of how much creditors will recover.
Which clothing company went bust?
The headline refers to Mosaic Brands, the company behind a portfolio of Australian fashion labels—not one individual shop. Its brands included Noni B, Millers, Katies, Rivers, Rockmans, Autograph, Crossroads, W.Lane and BeMe. Mosaic entered voluntary administration after unsuccessful attempts to restructure its operations. ABC News’ February 2025 account describes the group’s collapse and subsequent store wind-down.
Voluntary administration is a process for dealing with a financially distressed company and considering whether it can be restructured or sold. It is distinct from liquidation, which is the later process of winding up a company and dealing with its remaining assets and claims.
What did the reported $249 million cover?
In November 2024, The Nightly reported that minutes from Mosaic’s first creditors’ meeting put estimated liabilities at $249 million owed to 171 creditors, including landlords and inventory suppliers. The figure was an estimate drawn from those meeting minutes, not a final admitted-debt total. The report explicitly said it could change when administrators issued their final report. The Nightly’s November 25, 2024 report is the source for the estimate.

The commonly used “$250 million” headline rounds that reported $249 million figure. It should not be read as proof that creditors will receive $250 million, or that the final amount accepted in the insolvency will be exactly $249 million. A company’s liabilities and the amount ultimately recovered by creditors are different things.
What was owed to employees?
Employee claims were reported separately. In November 2024, The Nightly said more than 300 employees were owed money but gave no total. In March 2025, ABC News reported, citing the federal Department of Employment, that Mosaic workers were owed $21 million in entitlements such as pay and annual leave, plus $870,000 in superannuation. Those are reported worker amounts, not a confirmed payout, and the available reporting does not establish how they are treated in relation to the broader creditor estimate. ABC News reported the worker figures on March 26, 2025.

What happened to the stores and brands?
The closures unfolded in stages. Five Mosaic brands had already begun winding down in September 2024. After administrators and receivers failed to find buyers for any brand in the portfolio, the remaining Millers and Noni B operations were also slated to close. ABC News reported that this announcement was expected to shutter 252 stores and affect 933 employees, with remaining stores expected to close by mid-April 2025. These figures describe the announced final closure phase, not necessarily the entire group’s earlier shutdowns.
KPMG partner David Hardy said in the ABC report: “Despite the best efforts of all parties, we have been unable to achieve a sale of any of the brands within the Mosaic portfolio.” He added: “As a result, all stores in the Mosaic Brands Group will be wound down over the coming months.” The reporting therefore does not support the idea that the portfolio was sold intact to a buyer.

What is Mosaic Brands’ status now?
Retail closures did not end the parent company’s insolvency process. A December 2, 2025 Ragtrader report said Mosaic’s retail subsidiaries had been wound up and creditors had voted to liquidate the parent group; it reported liquidation began on July 2, 2025. The same report described a Federal Court challenge to the liquidators’ appointments that the judge dismissed, while noting the judge’s suggestion of special-purpose liquidators for certain claims. It also said investigations were continuing and further reporting to ASIC remained. Ragtrader’s December 2025 update does not establish final admitted debts or creditor recoveries.
That report also cited a statutory report estimating Mosaic may have been insolvent from December 31, 2020 or earlier. This is a reported estimate, not a final judicial finding. The available reporting establishes no final creditor payout, and does not establish developments after December 2025.

Why did the business fail?
Reporting on Mosaic’s collapse points to several pressures rather than one proven cause. ABC News described competition from online retailers, changes in customer behaviour, operational problems, pandemic-era losses and difficult retail conditions. Ragtrader’s December 2024 account discussed an investigation into the timing of possible safe-harbour advice; the timing and details were not established as final findings in that report. The causes should therefore be understood as reported contributing factors and areas of inquiry, not a single definitive explanation.
