The Mortgage Reports published a lender-network daily table showing a 30-year fixed rate of 7.488% and APR of 7.553%, while the same page separately cited a 6.293% 30-year fixed average. Freddie Mac’s latest weekly benchmark available that Monday was 6.20% for a 30-year fixed mortgage and 5.27% for a 15-year fixed mortgage, released September 12. These figures describe different rate series and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Mortgage rates reported for September 16, 2024
The Mortgage Reports’ September 16 daily report included two distinct 30-year fixed figures. Its partner-network table listed a rate and APR; elsewhere, the report gave a separate average at the time of publication. The publication cautioned that partner-network rates may not reflect the overall market.
| Measure | Figure | Source and meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 30-year fixed rate | 7.488% | The Mortgage Reports’ lender-partner-network daily table for September 16, 2024; the publication cautioned that partner-network rates may not reflect the market. |
| 30-year fixed APR | 7.553% | APR listed alongside the partner-network rate in The Mortgage Reports’ daily table for September 16, 2024. |
| 30-year fixed average | 6.293% | A separate average reported by The Mortgage Reports at publication time on September 16, 2024; it is not the partner-network table figure. |
The rate is the stated interest rate; APR is a broader measure that can include certain loan costs. The two measures therefore answer different questions. The available report does not establish one exact, official nationwide daily rate for September 16. The Mortgage Reports’ September 16 report presents its figures in separate contexts, not as a single definitive national quote.
Freddie Mac’s latest weekly benchmark on that date
Freddie Mac’s latest Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS) release available on Monday, September 16, was published Thursday, September 12. It reported a 6.20% average for 30-year fixed mortgages and 5.27% for 15-year fixed mortgages. These are weekly benchmark readings, not Monday-specific lender quotes.

Freddie Mac says PMMS draws on mortgage rates from applications submitted through its Loan Product Advisor system. Its national average is calculated from selected purchase applications meeting weekly conventional, single-family, conforming-loan criteria. The survey is generally published on Thursday and summarizes rates offered from the preceding Thursday through Wednesday. That scope matters: the PMMS figures are an application-based weekly average, not a guaranteed offer for an individual borrower or a reading for one specific day. Freddie Mac’s PMMS page describes the survey.
How the September figures fit the market
August context
Freddie Mac reported that the 30-year fixed average was 6.5% in August 2024 and ended the month at 6.35%. Freddie Mac also reported, citing Mortgage Bankers Association data, that refinances made up 46.4% of total mortgage application activity at the end of August. These are month-level context figures, not September 16 rate readings. Freddie Mac’s September 2024 outlook provides that context.

The next weekly release came later
Freddie Mac’s September 19 PMMS release reported 6.09% for 30-year fixed loans and 5.15% for 15-year fixed loans. That later decline helps show the direction of rates, but it cannot be backdated to September 16. Reuters reported that buyers continued to face high home prices and persistent supply shortages as rates improved. Freddie Mac chief economist Sam Khater told Reuters: “But despite the improving mortgage rate environment, prospective buyers remain on the sidelines, as they negotiate a combination of high house prices and persistent supply shortages.” Reuters’ September 12, 2024 report quoted Khater on those market conditions. Freddie Mac’s PMMS page provides the weekly rate series.
