The Bank of England survey records lenders’ assessments; it does not measure a matching percentage fall in mortgage applications, approvals or completed loans, and it does not establish why demand changed.
What did lenders report in Q3?
The Bank of England’s 2026 Q3 Credit Conditions Survey, published on 8 October 2026, found that lenders reported decreased demand for secured lending for house purchase and for remortgaging. They also reported a decrease in the availability of secured credit to households.

| Measure | Q2 2026 net balance | Q3 2026 net balance | Bank of England’s Q3 description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Availability of secured credit to households | 2.6 | -15.5 | Decrease |
| Demand for secured lending for house purchase | 14.9 | -37.1 | Decrease |
| Demand for secured lending for remortgaging | 42.5 | -32.5 | Decrease |
The figures are net percentage balances from lender responses, weighted by lenders’ market shares. A negative balance means that, on balance, lenders reported a decrease; it is not the percentage by which mortgage lending or applications fell. Under the Bank’s convention, a balance below -10 is classified as a “decrease.” The Q2-to-Q3 shifts show a reversal in reported direction for each of these measures, but do not represent equivalent changes in market volumes.

Yes. Lenders reported decreased demand for remortgaging, with a Q3 net balance of -32.5, compared with 42.5 in Q2. Demand for house-purchase lending was also reported lower: its balance was -37.1 in Q3, down from 14.9 in Q2. These balances allow a comparison of lenders’ reported direction and strength, not a direct comparison of the number of purchase or remortgage loans.

Why did mortgage demand fall?
The survey does not establish a cause. It records lenders’ assessments of changes in demand and availability; it does not demonstrate that interest rates, affordability or any other particular factor caused the reported decrease. Nor does it show that completed mortgage lending fell by the same amount.
What period does the survey cover?
Fieldwork ran from 17 August to 4 September 2026. For Q3, lenders reported changes over the three months to the end of August, relative to March to May. The responses were therefore collected during a defined period and do not capture developments after fieldwork ended. The Bank also notes that the results are based on lenders’ own responses and “do not necessarily reflect our views on credit conditions.”

What did lenders expect for Q4?
Respondents expected secured-credit availability to increase slightly in the three months to the end of November. They also expected house-purchase lending demand to increase slightly and remortgage demand to increase. These are lender expectations, not confirmed Q4 outcomes.

How did other credit conditions compare?
The wider survey did not show every credit category moving in the same way. Lenders reported that unsecured-credit availability to households decreased, while overall demand for unsecured lending was unchanged. Overall corporate credit availability was unchanged, although availability to small and medium-sized businesses decreased.
