Re:

Mortgage Credit Scores vs. Credit Scores for Credit Cards and Auto Loans

Lenders may use different score models and bureau files for mortgages, auto loans and credit cards. Here’s how the common FICO versions differ and what changed for eligible Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans.

Your mortgage, auto-loan and credit-card applications may be evaluated with different credit scores—even when they are based on the same credit history. Lenders choose the scoring model and credit bureau data they use. Mortgage lending has commonly relied on older base FICO versions, while auto lenders often use FICO Auto Scores and card issuers often use FICO Bankcard Scores. These are common patterns, not a guarantee about a particular lender.

Mortgage rules for loans sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are also changing. As of October 2, 2026, approved lenders may use Classic FICO or VantageScore 4.0 for eligible loans delivered to those two enterprises. That policy does not set one score rule for every mortgage or lending channel.

Why can your mortgage, auto and credit-card scores differ?

There is no single universal credit score that every lender uses. A score is calculated from information in a credit bureau file using a particular scoring model and version. Your result can therefore change when the model changes, the bureau file changes, or the information is evaluated at a different point in time.

FICO describes its base scores as predicting the likelihood that a person will not pay as agreed on any credit obligation. Its industry-specific scores start with base-score predictive information and are fine-tuned for risk behaviors associated with a particular type of credit, such as an auto loan or credit card. A score designed for one kind of account is not necessarily the score a lender will use for another.

Credit bureau files can differ because the bureaus may hold different information about you. A lender’s score may also reflect a different model version than the one shown by a bank, card account or free score service. Consequently, two scores pulled around the same time can disagree without either one being a mistake.

There are three things to separate when comparing a score: the bureau file, the scoring model and version, and the date the information was captured. A different bureau may have a different file; a different model may interpret a file differently; and a file may change between two score calculations. A visible gap between numbers alone does not tell you which of those factors caused it.

This is why the question “Why is my mortgage score different from my credit-card score?” does not have one answer for every borrower. The mortgage score may come from a different bureau and an older base FICO version, while the card issuer may use a Bankcard Score or a base score. The lender’s actual model and data determine the comparison. No population-wide statistic is available for how far apart these scores usually are, so no average difference should be assumed.

Which score models are commonly used for each application?

Application Common FICO models What to keep in mind
Mortgage FICO Score 2 for Experian, Score 5 for Equifax and Score 4 for TransUnion are versions listed for mortgage lending. The lender, mortgage channel and current program rules determine what applies. Eligible loans sold to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac may follow the newer Enterprise options described below.
Auto loan FICO Auto Scores, which have multiple versions by bureau. A general-purpose score shown in an app may not be the Auto Score used for underwriting. Ask the lender which bureau and version it uses.
Credit card FICO Bankcard Scores are common; issuers may also use base FICO Score 8 or Score 9. Issuers select their own model and may consider other information as well.

This mapping describes commonly used FICO models, not a promise that every lender follows it. FICO’s score-version reference lists versions and bureau associations; its credit-score education explains the distinction between base and industry-specific scoring.

The mortgage bureau-to-version pairing—Experian Score 2, Equifax Score 5 and TransUnion Score 4—is a reference point, not an instruction that every mortgage lender must pull all three or use that combination in every case. Actual score and reporting arrangements depend on the lender, mortgage channel and applicable program rules. Similarly, the Auto Score category has multiple versions across bureaus; the broad label “Auto Score” does not identify which version a particular lender will use.

For credit cards, Bankcard Scores are designed for card-related risk behavior, but the issuer may instead or additionally use a base FICO version such as Score 8 or Score 9. The issuer chooses its model. These examples help explain why two providers might display different numbers; they should not be read as a complete list of every score a lender could select.

So, which credit score do auto lenders use? Often an industry-specific FICO Auto Score, but a general-purpose score may not be the one used for underwriting. The only dependable way to learn the model and bureau for a particular application is to ask the lender. The same qualification applies to cards and mortgages: published model examples describe common patterns, not an individual lender’s promise.

What is changing in mortgage credit scoring?

For eligible loans sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) says approved lenders may choose Classic FICO or VantageScore 4.0, subject to Enterprise Selling Guide requirements. FHFA’s policy page, last updated October 2, 2026, says the expanded VantageScore 4.0 option became available to all approved lenders on September 9, 2026.

FICO 10T is approved and planned for future use, but it is not currently eligible for delivery to the Enterprises. Classic FICO remains eligible, and FHFA has announced no retirement date for it. These details apply to eligible Enterprise deliveries; they do not establish a universal rule for every mortgage, government-backed loan or other channel. For the current status and scope, see FHFA’s credit-score model implementation page.

The September 9, 2026 expansion matters because VantageScore 4.0 had previously been in a limited rollout. FHFA’s update says approved lenders may now use it for eligible Enterprise loans under the applicable selling-guide requirements. It does not mean that every mortgage applicant will automatically receive a VantageScore 4.0 evaluation, or that a lender must choose it instead of Classic FICO.

“Mortgage score” therefore is not one fixed score shared identically across lenders and loan products. The FHFA options apply to eligible loans delivered to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. A loan that does not follow that Enterprise channel may be subject to different program rules. If you are comparing lenders or preparing an application, ask which model and bureau information apply to your specific loan rather than assuming the Enterprise change governs every mortgage.

In announcing the transition on October 24, 2022, FHFA Director Sandra L. Thompson said the newer models “bring improved accuracy and a more inclusive approach to evaluating borrowers.” That was the agency’s rationale for the change at the time, not a guarantee about an individual borrower’s score, approval or loan terms.

How do the score ranges compare?

  • Base FICO scores: 300 to 850.
  • Industry-specific FICO scores: 250 to 900.

Within a given model, a higher score signals lower risk to lenders. But a number from one model family should not be treated as an identical measurement to the same or a similar number from another family. The different ranges and scoring methods make direct one-to-one comparisons unreliable.

The ranges are published model ranges, not a description of what score a particular person should have, what score guarantees approval, or how a lender will price a loan. A 700 from a base FICO model and a 700 from an industry-specific score are not necessarily equivalent readings because they come from different scoring families and may be based on different files. A score’s meaning is tied to the model that produced it.

Do not infer from the higher top end of an industry-specific scale that it is automatically a “better” score, or compare the raw points as if all score models shared one ruler. The practical comparison is whether two scores use the same model family and version, the same bureau data and approximately the same date. If those details are unknown, the numbers offer context but not a clean measure of change.

How can you find out which score your lender will use?

  1. Ask about the model and version. Ask: “Which scoring model and version will you use?” A broad answer such as “a FICO score” may not identify the exact score. If the lender can provide it, record the model name and version so you can compare it accurately with any consumer score you have seen.
  2. Ask which bureau reports will be pulled. The bureau matters because its file may contain different information from another bureau’s file. Ask whether the lender uses one bureau or multiple bureau reports for the application, and avoid assuming that a score from a different bureau is directly comparable.
  3. For a mortgage, ask which loan channel and rules apply. Specifically ask whether the loan follows FHFA Enterprise policy for delivery to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. The newer options described above are limited to eligible Enterprise loans. If it does, ask whether the lender plans to use Classic FICO or VantageScore 4.0 under current requirements.
  4. Use consumer scores as context, not a forecast. A free app or a report showing a general-purpose score may use a different bureau file or model than the lender’s underwriting score. It can help you monitor your credit, but it does not guarantee the score, approval or pricing a lender will determine.

These questions are more useful than asking only, “What is my credit score?” A score without its model, bureau and date is incomplete for comparison purposes. You do not need to memorize every score version before applying; you need enough information to know whether the number you have is the one the lender will use.

FICO says some one-time score report products include FICO Score 8 and may include additional versions for mortgages, auto loans and credit cards. The provider cautions that a lender may use a different score. Details about what a particular report includes are available on myFICO’s report products page; a consumer report is not assurance that it will match a lender’s pull.

A multi-score report can be useful if your goal is to see several score versions from the provider, but treat it as an information service, not a guarantee of lender alignment. Before relying on any report to prepare for a specific application, check which versions and bureau files it includes and compare those details with what the lender says it uses. No particular service can be assumed to provide the exact lender score for every application.

How should you interpret a difference between scores?

First check whether the scores use the same bureau, model family and version. If they do not, the difference may reflect the inputs or scoring method rather than a sudden change in your underlying credit history. Even when the model is the same, scores calculated from files captured at different times may differ because the file can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an upcoming application, the lender’s chosen score is the one relevant to that decision. A different score displayed elsewhere can still be useful for general monitoring, but it cannot establish in advance exactly how the application will be evaluated. If a result seems unexpected, ask the lender which model and bureau data it used and review the credit report information associated with that decision.

Try not to compare scores by looking at the number alone. For example, if a credit-card account displays a base FICO score while an auto lender evaluates an Auto Score, those numbers are not necessarily two readings from the same scale. If a mortgage score differs from a free-app score, the gap could also reflect bureau-file differences or the age of the data. No standard size or direction has been established for these differences, so it is not possible to conclude from the gap alone that one score is wrong.

A sensible review sequence is: identify the model and version behind each number; identify the bureau file used; note when each score was calculated; then ask the lender for the score details if the difference affects an active application. This process helps distinguish a model mismatch from a difference in the underlying bureau information. It does not itself predict an approval decision or change the score.

There is also no need to chase every score version merely because several exist. The practical question is which score matters for the product you are applying for and whether the score report you have is a comparable reference. Because lenders choose models and may consider other information, knowing a displayed score does not by itself reveal the lender’s complete underwriting decision.

Do you need to know all your FICO Scores?

Usually, the useful first step is to identify the score relevant to the application you are considering, not to collect every possible score. There are multiple base and industry-specific versions, and different lenders can choose different models and bureau data. If you are not applying for a particular product, a consumer score can still offer general context, but it should not be treated as a forecast for a later mortgage, auto loan or credit-card decision.

If you are applying soon, ask the lender for the model, version, bureau and—if it is a mortgage—the applicable loan channel and current program rules. Those details tell you whether a score you already have is a like-for-like comparison. If the lender cannot identify the precise version before the application, keep that uncertainty in mind rather than assuming that a score service or another lender uses the same one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my mortgage score different from my credit-card score?

The scores may use different model families or versions, different bureau files, or information captured at different times. Mortgage lending has commonly used older base FICO versions; card issuers often use FICO Bankcard Scores, though they may also use base FICO Score 8 or 9. Ask the lender which model and bureau data it used before treating the numbers as directly comparable.

Which credit score do auto lenders use?

Auto lenders often use industry-specific FICO Auto Scores, which have multiple versions by bureau. A general-purpose score shown by an app may not be the score used for underwriting. Ask the lender which bureau and score version it uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to know all my FICO Scores?

Not necessarily. Focus first on the score model, version and bureau relevant to the loan or card you plan to seek. Consumer scores can help with general monitoring, but lenders choose their own models and may use different bureau data.

Can I rely on a free credit score or a score-report product to predict a lender’s score?

No. A free app or report may show a different model version or bureau file from the lender’s. Some one-time myFICO reports include FICO Score 8 and may include mortgage, auto and card versions, but myFICO cautions that a lender may use a different score.

Which mortgage score will a lender use in 2026?

It depends on the lender, mortgage channel and current program rules. As of FHFA’s October 2, 2026 update, approved lenders may choose Classic FICO or VantageScore 4.0 for eligible loans sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, subject to Enterprise Selling Guide requirements. FICO 10T is approved but not currently eligible for delivery, and FHFA has announced no Classic FICO retirement date.

Does the FHFA score change apply to every mortgage?

No. The policy described applies to eligible loans delivered to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. It is not a universal score rule for every mortgage, government-backed loan or lending channel. Ask your lender which rules apply to your specific loan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are base FICO and industry-specific FICO scores on the same scale?

No. Base FICO scores range from 300 to 850, while industry-specific FICO scores range from 250 to 900. A higher score within a given model signals lower risk, but raw numbers from different model families should not be treated as identical measurements.

The Bottom Line

Mortgage, auto and credit-card lenders may use different FICO models, versions and bureau files, so a score shown in one place may not match the score used for another application. Ask the lender which model, version and bureau it uses; for a mortgage, confirm the loan channel and current program rules. As of October 2, 2026, eligible Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans may use Classic FICO or VantageScore 4.0, while FICO 10T is not yet eligible for delivery.
