A fire destroyed Morley Market in Morley, Perth, on 3 September 2025, affecting every business in the building. Morley Library became a temporary recovery hub where affected businesses and community members could connect with translators and support services. A year later, businesses described sharply different paths to recovery: some had relocated, while others were still seeking premises or struggling to recover losses through insurance.
What happened at Morley Market?
The fire destroyed the Morley Market building in the early hours of Wednesday, 3 September 2025. Contemporary reporting said every business in the building was affected. In its September 2026 follow-up, ABC News described the complex as home to more than 20 stores and restaurants, most of them family-run.
ABC News reported that about 70 firefighters battled the blaze for seven hours. That is the figure reported by ABC, rather than an independently verified incident statistic. The contemporary reports did not establish a definitive cause: the fire was treated as non-suspicious, and police said there was no criminality involved and the cause was unknown. How Morley Library served as a recovery hub
After the fire, the City of Bayswater and the Western Australian Department of Communities used Morley Library as a place to connect affected people with support. The initial response included translators and access to welfare support, counselling and financial advice. The Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) was among the services supporting people affected by the fire.

In a later account, the City said it partnered with agencies, arranged translators for community drop-in sessions and made library space available for appointments between service providers and affected business owners. The sessions were intended to support owners, employees, tenants and customers. The City’s account describes the response; it does not establish that the hub is still operating. At the time, Bella Skin Clinic owner Mina Ehsan appealed for public support, saying, “We want to be on our feet, we need to start from somewhere.” A state government spokesperson also told ABC News that SBDC had been on the ground at the City’s recovery hub as part of a broader range of support services. What did recovery look like one year later?
By September 2026, recovery was uneven among the businesses described in ABC News’ follow-up. Some owners had established themselves elsewhere; others were still looking for premises. The available reporting is not a survey of every affected trader, so these accounts should not be taken as a complete picture of all businesses.
Relocation and the search for premises
Some businesses had managed to reopen elsewhere, but others had not found a new location. The difference matters: replacing a destroyed business is not only a matter of restarting trade, but also of securing a suitable premises.

Insurance did not resolve every loss
ABC reported that some owners found it difficult to recoup losses through insurance. One owner said he had public liability insurance but no contents insurance, and described difficulty getting a response from his insurer. This is his account of his own coverage and claim experience, not evidence that every affected business had the same policy or encountered the same problem.
The market site remained vacant at the time of the follow-up
In its September 2026 report, ABC said the City described the market site as vacant and fenced off and said it had received no applications to redevelop it. Those details reflect the status reported at that time, not a verified update after September 2026. ABC News, 3 September 2026

The reporting identifies the City of Bayswater’s recovery hub and SBDC as sources of support during the response. It does not confirm that the hub or the services described remain available now.
