The offer price was RMB114.28; the stock opened around RMB650, about 425% higher. The debut showed how strongly investors value China’s effort to build domestic AI-computing capacity. It did not prove Moore Threads has matched Nvidia’s technology, commercial scale or profitability.
What Moore Threads does
Moore Threads Intelligent Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd. designs, researches and sells graphics processing units (GPUs) and related accelerated-computing products. Its stated product scope includes graphics rendering and AI computing. The Shanghai Stock Exchange describes it as one of a small number of domestic GPU companies supporting both uses; that description does not establish performance parity with overseas competitors. Why investors rushed to buy
Domestic compute has strategic value
Restrictions on access to advanced foreign semiconductors have raised the strategic importance of Chinese suppliers. Moore Threads is part of a broader effort to develop an indigenous computing stack, from chips to software and deployment. The Shanghai Stock Exchange’s description places the company within that domestic GPU effort, while making no claim that its products equal those of global leaders. Shanghai Stock Exchange coverage
There are relatively few domestic GPU stories
Investors seeking exposure to Chinese AI hardware have a limited set of listed companies they can associate with general-purpose or AI-oriented accelerators. Scarcity can attract capital, but it does not by itself establish mature products, repeat commercial demand or attractive returns.
IPO mechanics amplified enthusiasm
Millions of online accounts and demand far exceeding the online allocation indicate intense retail interest. When the shares available to a tranche are limited, this kind of demand can magnify first-day price moves. It measures appetite for the offering, not the company’s future earnings.

The AI theme can outrun the evidence
AI infrastructure is a powerful investment narrative, but an AI-related product label is not proof of recurring sales or sustainable margins. For a chip designer, the harder questions are whether customers deploy its products in production, reorder them, and can use them efficiently with the available software.

Is Moore Threads really “China’s Nvidia”?
“China’s Nvidia” is a market shorthand, not a verified statement of equivalence. Moore Threads is better described as a Chinese domestic GPU challenger or a potential strategic alternative. The available official description supports its role in graphics and AI computing, but does not demonstrate parity with Nvidia in performance, manufacturing scale, software maturity, ecosystem depth or profitability.
| Comparison area | What is established for Moore Threads | What a reader should not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Product scope | The SSE says the company supports graphics rendering and AI computing. | That it performs as well as Nvidia across workloads. |
| Software and developers | The cited company and exchange materials do not establish equivalent software maturity or developer adoption. | That customers can simply substitute its tools and libraries for CUDA or other established software. |
| Manufacturing, packaging and memory | The available materials do not establish parity in fabrication access, advanced packaging or high-bandwidth memory supply. | That domestic chip design means a fully domestic or unconstrained supply chain. |
| Deployments and distribution | The cited sources establish the company’s product positioning, not comparable cloud-provider adoption, enterprise deployment or global distribution. | That broad commercial availability or customer reach matches Nvidia’s. |
| Financial scale | Offering materials report 2024 revenue of about RMB438.46 million and disclose that the company was not profitable at listing. | That its revenue scale or economics resemble Nvidia’s. |
A fair technical comparison would need workload-specific benchmarks, methods and test conditions, power use, software compatibility, production capacity and evidence from customer deployments. The sources cited here do not establish those comparisons. Offering materials · Prospectus material
What the financial record says—and does not say
Offering materials put Moore Threads’ 2024 revenue at approximately RMB438.46 million. Prospectus material says the company was not profitable when it listed. That is a useful starting point, not a complete account of its financial condition: the cited figures do not, on their own, establish a current revenue run rate, gross-margin trend, operating cash flow, customer concentration or time to profitability. The offering used a price-to-sales framework rather than a conventional price-to-earnings one, reflecting the absence of profits at the time. Price-to-sales can help describe what investors pay relative to revenue, but it cannot establish that future sales will arrive, that margins will improve or that the business will eventually generate cash. A dramatic increase from the IPO offer price makes the valuation question more pressing; the debut alone cannot answer it.

Risks investors should weigh
Valuation and volatility
A sharp listing gain can price in years of hoped-for growth. The shares could decline even if revenue grows, if expectations or the valuation multiple fall. The opening-price figure describes the reported first-day opening, not a durable value or a current quote.
Software and execution
GPU performance depends on more than the chip. Drivers, compilers, libraries, documentation and compatibility with customers’ applications shape the cost and difficulty of deployment. A product may be strategically important yet struggle to win repeat business if the surrounding software is not dependable or familiar.

Manufacturing and supply chain
A domestic designer is not necessarily independent of overseas or constrained sources for fabrication, packaging, memory or production equipment. The cited IPO and exchange materials do not establish complete supply-chain control, so investors should look for specific evidence rather than assume it from the company’s nationality.
Losses and financing needs
Developing GPUs requires sustained engineering and investment before commercial scale. A loss-making company may need to raise more capital if operations consume cash faster than sales grow. IPO proceeds provide funding, but they do not guarantee that the company will reach profitable scale.
Customer concentration and policy dependence
Revenue growth is more durable when it comes from multiple customers making repeat purchases for commercial reasons. A small number of government-linked or other large buyers can make sales lumpy; policy-backed demand can help early adoption without assuring lasting commercial margins. The cited materials do not establish the company’s current customer concentration.

Trading access for overseas investors
Moore Threads is a mainland China STAR Market share, not a U.S.-listed ADR. Whether an overseas investor can buy it depends on broker access, investor eligibility, exchange connectivity, currency conversion, settlement rules and applicable regulatory restrictions. A U.S. reader should confirm current requirements with a licensed broker rather than assume an ordinary U.S. brokerage account offers access.
How to assess the company after its debut
Track evidence that can test the investment thesis, rather than treating the IPO rally as confirmation:
- Sales quality: Look for recurring revenue, new independent commercial customers and repeat orders, not growth alone.
- Economics: Follow gross margins, operating cash flow, research-and-development expense, net losses and any additional capital needs.
- Working capital: Review customer concentration, receivables and inventory; rising balances alongside sales can affect cash conversion.
- Technical adoption: Seek production deployments, software releases, developer use and transparent, workload-specific benchmark results.
- Supply capacity: Watch for evidence that fabrication, packaging and memory supply can support customer demand.
- Share supply and market expectations: Check exchange disclosures for restricted-share unlocks, new fundraising and changes in institutional ownership, and compare the valuation with reported sales rather than the offer price alone.
Company announcements and investor materials are available on the Moore Threads investor-relations page; exchange notices can also be checked through the STAR Market disclosure resources.
What the IPO does—and does not—signal
The listing demonstrated powerful investor demand for China’s domestic AI-compute theme and gave Moore Threads substantial public-market visibility. It did not demonstrate that the company has Nvidia-level technology, broad commercial adoption or a profitable business model. Those remain questions for operating results, customer deployments and technical evidence—not the first-day share price.
