Moon & Mary is an operating restaurant, cocktail bar and working distillery in Fremantle, Western Australia—not just a venue announced in 2024. It opened in September 2024 in the former Fremantle police lock-up at 45 Henderson Street. The venue brings together modern Asian dining, drinks, an outdoor beer garden and private event spaces.
What is Moon & Mary?
Moon & Mary is Jacquie Chan’s Fremantle hospitality venture, with three named areas for different kinds of visits: Best Behaviour, The Dining Room and The Rec Yard. Tourism Western Australia’s 2025 media kit confirms the venue opened in September 2024; the venue’s official website describes its current offer as a modern Asian restaurant, cocktail bar and working distillery.
The opening plan was reported in August 2024, before the venue opened. PerthNow’s preview described a restaurant, casual beer garden and distillery, and named Zane Morrison as head chef and Aldren Teo as group executive chef. Those are opening-period details, not confirmation of the current team or menu. The preview also reported that Chan wanted the venue to honour Moon Chow and Mary. Tourism Western Australia says the concept draws inspiration from Moon Chow’s story, describing him as a documented early Chinese arrival in Western Australia. The available accounts do not establish a full biography of the couple.
Three areas, three different experiences
Best Behaviour: bar and distillery
Best Behaviour is the bar and distillery, described by the venue as including a speakeasy. Visit Fremantle identifies it as a working distillery. The venue’s overall cocktail offering is part of its current presentation, but the spirits listed in the 2024 preview—including vodka, gin, spiced rum and whiskey—were opening-period plans, not confirmation of current production or retail availability.

The Rec Yard: outdoor beer garden
The Rec Yard is the outdoor beer garden, offering a less formal setting than the Dining Room. It is one of the venue’s distinct areas rather than a separate Fremantle business.

A restaurant in a former Fremantle lock-up
The building is part of the experience: Moon & Mary occupies the former Fremantle police lock-up. Visit Fremantle dates the lock-up to 1894 and notes the site’s former cells, some of which now serve as private dining or event spaces. In PerthNow’s 8 August 2024 preview, Chan said the opportunity felt like “the perfect location to return to our roots.”
The venue’s character draws on the historic setting, but the sources do not support treating every detail of the building or its past as part of the restaurant’s story. For a visit, the practical distinction is that this is a contemporary restaurant and bar operating in a former lock-up, with some cells adapted for private use.

Address, opening hours and bookings
The official website currently lists Moon & Mary at 45 Henderson Street, Fremantle. Its listed hours are Wednesday and Thursday, 5–9 pm; Friday and Saturday, noon until late; and Sunday, noon–4 pm. Hours, offers and menus can change, so check the venue’s site for the latest information before setting out. The site links to bookings, menus, current offers and functions.
For a dining-room meal, use the venue’s booking link rather than assuming walk-ins will be available. For an event, enquire through the functions page and confirm the details that matter to your group, especially the space, seated capacity and timing.
