The deal was more than a conventional funding round: it paired the investment with a strategic partnership and BitSight’s planned acquisition of VisibleRisk. Moody’s said it would become BitSight’s largest shareholder but retain a minority stake after closing.
What the 2021 transaction included
Moody’s Corporation announced the $250 million investment and $2.4 billion valuation on September 13, 2021. Those figures describe the announced transaction at that time; they do not establish BitSight’s current valuation. The same announcement said BitSight would acquire VisibleRisk, a cyber-risk ratings joint venture created by Moody’s and Team8, and that Moody’s would become BitSight’s largest shareholder while holding a minority stake after closing. The ownership description matters: largest shareholder did not mean majority owner or control. The release described Moody’s post-closing position as a minority stake.
Why Moody’s invested
Moody’s presented the investment and partnership as a way to bring BitSight’s cyber-risk data and research into Moody’s risk-assessment offerings. BitSight said the combination would expand its ability to measure and manage cyber risk, while the VisibleRisk acquisition would add deeper assessment capabilities, including analysis of financial exposure. These were the companies’ stated aims at announcement, not evidence by themselves of later results.

Rob Fauber, then Moody’s president and chief executive officer, said: “As organizations invest in cyber defense and resilience, another critical need has emerged: the ability to accurately measure and quantify cyber risk and exposure.” The statement captures Moody’s rationale for the deal; it is an executive’s view, not an independent finding about the accuracy of any rating system. What BitSight’s platform did
BitSight described its business as cybersecurity ratings, analytics, and performance-management tools. In its September 13, 2021 announcement, the company said its Security Ratings Platform generated daily ratings on a scale from 250 to 900. It identified several intended uses:
- Monitoring and managing an organization’s security performance.
- Assessing third-party risk across suppliers and other business relationships.
- Supporting cyber-insurance underwriting.
- Informing financial diligence and national-security work.
Those are company descriptions of the platform and its use cases; they are not an independent assessment of rating accuracy or predictive performance. BitSight’s September 2021 announcement

Moody’s announcement also described BitSight as serving more than 2,300 global customers. That was a company-reported figure in 2021, not a current customer count. The release further cited a Moody’s Investors Service review that identified 13 sectors with high or medium-high cyber vulnerability or impact risk and total rated debt exceeding $20 trillion. This was Moody’s characterization of its own review—not an independent estimate of cyber losses or a general measure of the cyber-risk market. Moody’s transaction announcement

The headline’s $250 million and $2.4 billion figures belong to a specific 2021 strategic transaction. They should not be read as a recent financing, a current valuation, or proof that Moody’s acquired control. The central story was the combination of capital, a minority investment intended to make Moody’s the largest shareholder, a partnership around cyber-risk information, and BitSight’s acquisition of VisibleRisk.
BitSight’s company history later described additional acquisitions and reported company metrics, including surpassing $200 million in annual recurring revenue in 2025. Those later company-reported developments provide subsequent context but do not change the terms or stated rationale of the September 2021 transaction. BitSight company history
