Monzo’s Irish subsidiary, Monzo Bank Europe Designated Activity Company (MBEU), was authorised as a bank in 2025. The licence gives Monzo a regulated base for its European plans, starting with Ireland; it does not mean Irish accounts are available across the EU or establish a Europe-wide rollout timetable.
Which Monzo entity received the licence?
The authorised institution is Monzo Bank Europe Designated Activity Company, also referred to as Monzo Bank Europe DAC or MBEU. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Monzo Bank Holdings Group Limited, according to the Central Bank of Ireland (CBI). This is distinct from simply describing the UK Monzo bank as the licence holder.
The CBI’s Annual Report 2025 records that MBEU was authorised during 2025. The CBI’s Credit Institutions Register also lists the company as authorised under Irish legislation to carry on banking business. The register was run on 11 May 2026.
Those sources establish the year of authorisation, but not the exact date the licence was granted or any specific licence conditions.

What does “European banking licence” mean here?
Monzo described its approval as a full banking licence from the European Central Bank (ECB) and the CBI. The CBI’s guidance says the ECB is the competent authority for granting Irish banking licences under Section 9 of the Central Bank Act, 1971, as amended. The CBI’s annual report and register provide the Irish regulator’s record of MBEU’s authorisation.
The phrase “European” describes the licence in Monzo’s announcement and the company’s European expansion plans. The evidence establishes an Irish-authorised institution, not a licence that makes Monzo accounts available everywhere in Europe. Monzo said Ireland would be its first European market.

What has Monzo announced for customers in Ireland?
After announcing the licence, Monzo said it was ready to offer Irish personal and business accounts. Its public launch post identifies Monzo Bank Europe DAC, trading as Monzo, as regulated by the CBI. The announcements describe Ireland as the starting point for expansion and a market where Monzo intended to learn from local customers and shape its product.
The launch announcement does not establish that every Irish resident—or people based elsewhere in the European Economic Area—can apply. It also does not confirm a Europe-wide launch, a specific timetable for other countries, or whether an Irish IBAN is available. Prospective customers should check Monzo’s current Ireland materials for eligibility, fees, account terms, account details and deposit-protection information before applying.

What do the company’s reported figures tell us?
Monzo’s FY2026 “Year in review” reports £1.7 billion in revenue, £25.7 billion in deposits and 15.2 million total customers. These are Monzo-reported figures for the company, not regulator findings, and they do not show that the Irish licence caused the results.
In the same annual-report page, Monzo Group CEO Diana Layfield said the company was “bringing Monzo magic to Europe in a way that feels truly local from day one.” That describes the company’s stated ambition; the public announcements do not provide a timetable for further country launches.

What remains unclear for customers?
The authorisation confirms Monzo Bank Europe DAC’s regulatory status in Ireland. It does not, by itself, answer the practical questions people may have before opening an account. The cited announcements and regulatory records do not specify:
- the exact date the licence was granted or its individual conditions;
- current eligibility rules for Irish accounts, including applications from people living elsewhere in the EEA;
- the account fee schedule, detailed terms, or whether an Irish IBAN is available;
- deposit-protection arrangements for MBEU customers; or
- when Monzo might launch in other European countries.
