On March 18, 2026, authorities closed one runway at Montréal–Trudeau International Airport while investigating a suitcase on an aircraft that had landed. The airport later called the investigation unfounded and said both runways had reopened. Separately, NORAD said it monitored two Montréal-bound aircraft until they landed safely, but its public statement did not explain what prompted the monitoring. The available accounts do not establish that the suitcase caused the NORAD response.

What happened at Montréal–Trudeau

Airport officials described a suitcase aboard a landed aircraft as a “package of interest.” Authorities investigated it, and one runway was temporarily closed to support that work. The other runway remained available, but the airport’s capacity was reduced while the investigation was underway. The reports do not establish that a bomb was found or that a bomb threat was confirmed.

According to airport spokesperson Eric Forest, quoted by CityNews and The Canadian Press, the investigation concluded around 6 p.m. The airport said it was unfounded, both runways were open, and operations had returned to normal.

What NORAD said about the flights

NORAD characterized the matter as an “air security incident” and said it monitored two aircraft bound for Montréal until they landed safely. Its public account, as reported by CityNews and The Canadian Press, did not identify the alert trigger or provide further details of the monitoring response.

The suitcase investigation and NORAD’s monitoring are related in the reporting about the same day’s events, but the public statements do not show that one caused the other. Describing the incident as fighter jets escorting flights goes beyond the detail provided in NORAD’s reported statement.

What the disruptions meant for flights

Reuters reported that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop affecting flights bound for Montréal from certain U.S. airports. The stop lasted about 90 minutes. After it ended, the FAA reported average departure delays of 54 minutes due to airport volume. Those figures describe this incident, as reported by Reuters on March 18, 2026; they are not typical delay estimates for Montréal airport.

What police said—and what remains unproven

Police initially reported two arrests, then clarified that one person might face fraud charges at a later date. A possible future charge is not a charge already laid, and it is not a conviction. The reports do not establish that the person committed fraud.

The RCMP said it was not involved because it saw no national-security nexus. That explanation concerns the RCMP’s involvement; it does not disclose why NORAD monitored the two aircraft.
