To decide whether one fits your budget, compare the full cost over the plan term with the current local prices of services your pet is likely to use, then check limits, location access, and contract terms.
What a monthly pet wellness plan pays for
A veterinary wellness plan generally bundles or prepays defined preventive services, such as exams, vaccinations, or diagnostic testing. The exact services depend on the provider, package, pet, and location. A monthly payment changes when you pay; it does not automatically mean every routine service is included or that the plan covers unexpected treatment.
Banfield describes its Optimum Wellness Plans as annual preventive-care plans paid either in 12 equal monthly installments or annually. Its overview says, “Optimum Wellness Plans are annual plans that spread the cost of your pet’s preventive care over 12 equal monthly payments.” Source: Banfield Pet Hospital, Optimum Wellness Plans overview.
Banfield’s materials say plan selection depends on species, age, health needs, and recommended preventive care. Its separate Access Plan is described as routine veterinary support with monthly or annual payment options; review the plan details to understand what services and terms apply. How to compare the cost with services your pet will use
Compare the plan’s total required payments for its full term with the clinic’s current itemized prices for the services your pet is likely to receive during that same period. Do not judge a plan by its monthly price or advertised savings alone.
- Calculate the full commitment. Multiply the monthly payment by the required number of months, or use the annual price. Check the agreement for renewal, cancellation, and any remaining-payment obligations.
- Build a likely-use list. Include only services you reasonably expect your pet to need during the term, based on its species, age, health needs, and life stage.
- Get local prices. Ask the clinic for current itemized prices for those services. Then match each one to the plan schedule and mark it as included, discounted, limited, optional, or excluded.
- Check practical access. Confirm which locations can provide the services, how appointments work, and whether any add-ons or visit charges apply.
- Account for unused benefits. Find out whether benefits expire, carry over, or can be used by another pet; do not count a benefit as savings if you are unlikely to use it.
Banfield’s 2026 materials list a starting price of $26.95 per month, with some plans exceeding $100 per month, and an approximate $52 monthly average. Those are Banfield’s published figures—not a market-wide average, personalized quote, or guarantee of savings—and Banfield says price varies by location and plan type. What provider examples show—and what to verify
Provider pages illustrate how packages can differ, but they are not a universal catalog of plan features. For example, Banfield’s dog-plan material describes preventive services and optional discounted monthly prescription heartworm, flea, and tick prevention. Its cat-plan page lists examples such as comprehensive exams, routine vaccinations, diagnostic testing, unlimited office visits, and Pet Chat access. Source: Banfield Pet Hospital, cat plan page. Wellness plans are not the same as pet insurance
A preventive-care plan is designed around specified routine services. Pet insurance is a separate arrangement that may help with eligible unexpected illness or injury costs, subject to its policy terms. Do not assume a wellness plan alone pays for emergencies, injuries, or illnesses.

Some insurers offer wellness add-ons alongside insurance. Chewy, for example, describes CarePlus wellness add-ons for routine expenses as well as insurance offerings, and identifies the underwriting entities for relevant plans. Terms can differ across plans, so check the current eligible expenses, benefit limits, reimbursement process, exclusions, and availability for the specific policy you are considering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a wellness plan worth it for dental cleanings?
It depends on the plan’s dental benefit, your pet’s likely need, and local prices. Ask the clinic what the plan covers for dental care and whether exams, cleaning, anesthesia, tests, or other related services are included, limited, or separately charged. Compare the full plan cost with the itemized price of the dental care your pet is likely to receive. A plan is not automatically a better deal just because it advertises a dental service.

Budget separately for unexpected veterinary costs
Because routine-care packages do not by themselves establish protection for unexpected illness or injury, keep a separate savings reserve or consider appropriate insurance. If you already have insurance, review its policy rather than assuming it covers routine care; a wellness add-on may have distinct benefit limits and reimbursement terms.
