MoneyGram suffered a cybersecurity incident beginning around September 20, 2024. The company took systems offline to contain the activity, disrupting online transfers, its mobile app, agent transactions and some partner services for days. MoneyGram later confirmed that an unauthorized third party accessed and acquired certain consumers’ personal information, but said its investigation found no evidence of ransomware, encryption or compromise of its payment-transfer systems.
What happened at MoneyGram?
MoneyGram detected activity indicating unauthorized access around September 20, 2024. As a containment measure, it took certain systems offline. That defensive shutdown disrupted the services customers and agents use to initiate, track and pay out transfers.

The outage affected MoneyGram’s website, mobile application and in-person agent network. Online transfers, money receipts and disbursements, some bill-payment services and transactions handled through international remittance partners were also affected. The disruption was broad, but availability and restoration timing varied by country, agent and channel.

MoneyGram initially described the problem as a network outage. On September 23, it publicly referred to a “cybersecurity issue.” The company later determined that an unauthorized third party had accessed and acquired certain consumers’ information between September 20 and September 22.

MoneyGram’s later account is important: the outage and the confirmed data access were related to the same incident, but they were not necessarily identical in duration. Systems remained unavailable or degraded while MoneyGram investigated, contained the activity and restored operations in phases.
MoneyGram’s later financial statement says payment-transfer operations began returning on September 23 and complete functionality was restored by September 26.

Why were payments delayed or unprocessed?
MoneyGram’s systems connect customers, agents, recipients and partner networks. Taking core systems offline can prevent a transfer from being initiated, verified, tracked or paid out even when the underlying funds have not been lost.
A customer may have encountered several different situations:
- A transfer was never successfully submitted.
- A transfer was accepted but could not yet be paid to the recipient.
- An agent or partner could not access MoneyGram’s platform to complete the transaction.
- The app or website displayed a pending status that had not refreshed.
- A transfer had completed, but its status had not yet updated.
MoneyGram said pending transactions would be made available once all systems were fully operational. That statement did not mean every pending transfer was automatically completed at the same time, nor did it announce a universal automatic refund or compensation policy.
What to do about a pending transfer
- Save the transaction reference number, receipt, screenshots and timestamps.
- Check the transaction through MoneyGram’s official website, app or support channels.
- Contact the sending agent or MoneyGram before sending a duplicate transfer.
- Ask whether the original transfer was paid, canceled, refunded or still pending.
- Keep records of additional fees or losses connected to the delay.
- Be cautious of anyone offering an unsolicited refund or asking for payment or identity documents to “release” funds.
An agent’s inability to access the platform did not by itself prove that a transfer had been canceled. Customers should verify the original transaction before trying again.

There is no cited public evidence establishing that ransomware or encryption caused the incident. MoneyGram’s forensic investigation, conducted with outside cybersecurity experts including CrowdStrike Services, found no evidence of encryption or ransomware.

Similarly, the available evidence confirms that certain customer information was accessed and acquired, but does not establish that MoneyGram’s payment funds or customers’ transfer funds were stolen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What MoneyGram did in response
MoneyGram said it took systems offline, investigated the activity, engaged external incident-response specialists, coordinated with law enforcement and restored services in a controlled, phased manner. It also said it notified affected customers, agents, regulators and other stakeholders, provided recommendations for protecting personal information and established a dedicated call center for affected consumers.
What affected customers should do now
- Read MoneyGram’s official breach notice and consumer FAQ.
- Change any reused MoneyGram or email-account passwords and enable multifactor authentication on important accounts.
- Monitor bank and card statements for unauthorized activity.
- Be alert for phishing, fake MoneyGram support, impersonation attempts and fraudulent refund or identity-verification messages.
- Consider a credit freeze or fraud alert if your Social Security number, identity documents or bank-account information may have been involved.
- Report suspected identity theft through the appropriate government agency and your financial institution.
- Use contact information from MoneyGram’s official website or breach notice rather than details supplied in an unsolicited message.
Not every affected customer needs paid identity-monitoring services. The appropriate response depends on the specific information involved and the customer’s risk of identity theft.
What remains unknown?
MoneyGram’s public disclosures did not identify the attacker or explain the initial access method. They also did not establish whether the acquired data was published or sold, provide the exact number of affected consumers, confirm that any transfer funds were stolen, or prove that every pending transaction was ultimately completed without individual follow-up.

Those limits matter. A confirmed data breach does not automatically mean payment systems were compromised, and a multiday outage does not by itself prove that ransomware caused the disruption.
Later litigation and settlement developments
The incident led to data-breach litigation and settlement proceedings. A later SEC-filed disclosure described a proposed $30 million U.S. data-breach class settlement, three years of privacy and monitoring services for eligible customers, approximately 35,000 U.S. arbitration claimants asserting or threatening claims, and separate state-court and arbitration settlements executed in March 2025.
The disclosure also described a Canadian data-breach settlement involving an allowed claim of $3.25 million. In September 2025, motions for preliminary approval of the U.S. and Canadian data-breach settlements were described as having received preliminary approval.
