Monarch Tractor says it is moving away from building tractors and shifting toward technology licensing. Later reporting identified Caterpillar as the buyer of Monarch’s assets, but the available public information does not establish a purchase price, the full legal scope of the deal, or a support commitment for existing tractor owners.
What happened to Monarch Tractor?
In an April 2026 statement, Monarch said that building and scaling a new tractor platform had brought unforeseen challenges. It described a move away from manufacturing and toward licensing its technology. The company said a large global equipment manufacturer had acquired its core technology, but did not name the buyer in that statement. Monarch Tractor’s April 2026 statement described the technology as including a software-defined vehicle platform, a perception stack and electrification systems.
On April 15, 2026, Successful Farming reported that Monarch had closed its doors earlier that month and that Caterpillar acquired its assets, citing Bloomberg. On April 20, the Los Angeles Times identified Caterpillar as the buyer, citing people familiar with the matter. The Times said Monarch had not named the buyer and that neither company responded to its request for comment. Caterpillar is therefore the reported buyer, rather than a buyer named in Monarch’s statement.
Did Caterpillar buy Monarch Tractor?
Reporting identifies Caterpillar as the acquirer of Monarch’s assets, but that is not the same as establishing that Caterpillar bought the operating company as a going concern. The public material available does not disclose the full legal scope of the transaction, an itemized asset schedule, or whether liabilities were assumed.

Monarch said its technology had been validated for possible uses beyond tractors, including augers, utility vehicles and construction equipment. That was Monarch’s description of potential applicability; it is not an announcement that Caterpillar has incorporated the technology into a product or committed to a particular deployment.
What is known about Monarch’s finances?
Successful Farming reported that Monarch launched in 2018, was founded by Carlo Mondavi and Mark Schwager, raised more than $240 million in venture capital and reached a valuation above $500 million. Those are reported fundraising and valuation figures—not the price of the Caterpillar transaction or proceeds to investors.

CNH Industrial’s fiscal 2025 annual report disclosed a $62 million non-cash impairment involving its investment in Monarch Tractors and other minority holdings. The filing combines those holdings in the amount, so it does not establish a Monarch-only write-down. Nor is the impairment a measure of what Caterpillar paid. CNH Industrial’s 2025 annual report is the source for that disclosure.
Will Caterpillar support existing Monarch tractor owners?
The reviewed public statements and reporting do not establish whether Caterpillar will provide service, parts, software, warranty coverage or other support to existing owners. No support commitment should be inferred from the reported acquisition of assets. Owners should check their purchase and warranty documents and seek current guidance from the seller or any service provider named in those documents; the available sources do not verify a current Monarch support channel.

How Monarch’s stated business model was changing
Monarch described a shift from selling complete tractors to licensing the underlying technology. The distinction is between making and selling finished equipment itself and licensing systems for use by other equipment makers. The company presented licensing as its direction after leaving manufacturing, not as proof that the model would succeed commercially.
