At a joint press conference with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on 13 February 2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was asked about Gautam Adani’s U.S. indictment. Modi said leaders of the two countries do not discuss “such personal matters.” That was his public answer; contemporaneous reports do not establish what the two leaders said in their private meeting.
What Modi said about Adani and Trump
Scroll reported that a journalist asked whether Modi and Trump had discussed the U.S. indictment of Adani, whom the question described as perceived to be an ally of Modi. Modi replied: “First of all, India is a democratic country and our culture is Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. We treat the world as a family, and I treat every Indian as one of my own. Secondly, on such personal matters, the leaders of two countries neither meet, nor sit together, nor hold discussions.”

India Today summarized the question as asking whether Modi had asked Trump to take action in the Adani case. The wording differs between the two reports, but both describe a public question about Adani during the leaders’ press conference. Neither report independently confirms whether the issue came up in their private conversation. Scroll’s account of Modi’s answer; India Today’s account of the question.
What the U.S. case alleged
The question referred to Gautam Adani’s indictment in New York in a case related to solar projects in India. As Scroll reported the U.S. Attorney’s Office allegations, Adani and seven others, including his nephew Sagar Adani, agreed to pay more than $265 million in bribes to Indian government officials between 2020 and 2024 to secure renewable-energy contracts. Prosecutors alleged those contracts were expected to generate $2 billion in profit for the business over 20 years.

Rahul Gandhi, identified by Scroll as the Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition, criticized Modi’s response. Gandhi said: “If you ask questions within the country, there is silence. If you ask abroad, it is a personal matter!” He also accused Modi of trying to hide Adani’s alleged corruption in America. Those were Gandhi’s political claims, not established findings about Modi’s conduct or the case.

Scroll also reported that Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale called Modi “angry and flustered” and criticized his press interactions. These were Gokhale’s characterizations. Scroll’s report on the Opposition reaction.
