Mobile Trading Apps vs. Full-Service Brokerage Websites: Which Should You Use?

A trading app and a full-service brokerage are not opposites. Learn how to compare brokerage services, fees, features and support, then choose the interface that suits your needs.

Should you use a trading app or a full-service brokerage website? These are not necessarily competing kinds of brokerage account: an app and a website are ways to access a firm, while “full-service” describes the range of services it may provide. Choose a brokerage based on its services, costs, investments, tools, and support; then use the interface that fits the task.

First separate the brokerage service from the interface

A mobile app or website is a digital channel for managing an account. “Full-service” and “discount” describe brokerage service models, not screen sizes. A full-service brokerage may be accessed through an app as well as a website; an app does not, by itself, mean the firm offers only trade execution.

FINRA says full-service firms provide research and trade execution and might also offer customized portfolio management, investment advice, financial planning, banking privileges, and other services. Discount firms may offer low or zero commissions on certain products but fewer support services. What a particular firm includes—and what it charges extra for—depends on its current terms. FINRA’s overview of stocks and brokerage firms explains these broad distinctions.

Compare the brokerage on the services you need

Before choosing between firms, decide whether you want to make investment decisions yourself or are looking for advice or ongoing portfolio management. Confirm which services are actually available for the account you intend to open, whether they are included, and what they cost.

  • Self-directed investing: You choose investments and place orders yourself. Check whether the firm offers the assets and order tools you expect to use.
  • Research and planning: Ask what research, financial planning, or educational help is included and whether access depends on account type or additional fees.
  • Advice or managed portfolios: Find out whether advice is available, how the relationship works, and how any advisory fee is calculated. A percentage-based fee can be easier to assess when translated into dollars for your expected account balance.
  • Support: Compare the firm’s actual support channels and availability rather than assuming a website or app indicates how much help you can get.

Investor.gov’s guide to working with an investment professional describes disclosures and questions to consider. Form CRS can help you compare brokerage and advisory relationships and understand the services and fees described by a firm.

Check total costs, not just the commission

A low or zero commission on a particular transaction does not mean an account is cost-free. Depending on the firm and account, charges may include platform use, maintenance, inactivity, minimum-balance, transfer, closing, or wire fees, in addition to commissions where applicable. Advisory fees may also apply when you use an advisory service.

Rank #2

Read the firm’s current fee schedule and account disclosures, and focus on the charges that match services you will actually use. Investor.gov’s updated investor bulletin lists examples of fees investors may encounter. Terms can vary across firms and accounts, so do not rely on a “commission-free” label as a complete cost comparison.

Choose the interface by task and verify its features

A phone can be convenient for routine account access; a larger screen may suit the way some people prefer to review information or work through an order. Those are personal workflow preferences, not evidence that one interface is universally better or has more features. FINRA notes that platform design and functions can influence how customers open accounts, select investments, and trade. FINRA’s FinTech overview discusses the role of online platform design.

Check the specific broker’s current app and website for the capabilities that matter to you. If a feature is essential, verify it on the device and account type you plan to use rather than assuming the app and website are identical.

  • Are the investments you want available?
  • Can you access the research and order controls you need?
  • Can you set the alerts you rely on?
  • Does the interface work with your accessibility needs?
  • Can you reach support through a channel you are comfortable using?

Verify the firm and understand what protection does—and does not—cover

Before opening an account, use Investor.gov’s broker lookup to check a broker or investment professional’s registration and background. Review the firm’s disclosures and make sure you understand whether you are opening a brokerage account, entering an advisory relationship, or considering both.

Investor.gov notes that Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) protection may apply if a brokerage firm goes bankrupt or securities are stolen. It does not protect you from investment losses caused by a falling market or establish that an investment is suitable for you.

A practical way to decide

  1. Write down the service you want. Decide whether you need self-directed trading, research, human advice, financial planning, or managed portfolio services.
  2. Compare firms and account terms. Check available investments, included services, support, and the current fee schedule for the account you would open.
  3. Verify registration and disclosures. Use Investor.gov’s broker lookup and read Form CRS and other relevant account documents.
  4. Test the interface against your workflow. Confirm that the app, website, or both provide the tools, accessibility, alerts, and support access you need.
  5. Use the right channel for the task. You can use a phone for convenient access and a website for other account tasks if the firm supports both; the brokerage service, rather than the screen, determines the relationship and charges.
