Collider reported that Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning surpassed the worldwide gross of Oblivion, a 2013 science-fiction film, which Collider described as just under $288 million globally. That total comes from a Collider report whose full article could not be accessed, so treat it as a reported figure rather than a verified one.
What the headline is actually saying
The phrase “sends … into Oblivion” describes a ranking. It means that the later film’s worldwide gross is reported to have passed the earlier film’s. It does not mean that the two films share characters, a storyline, or a director. Two details in the headline are easy to misread:
- Joseph Kosinski directed Oblivion, not The Final Reckoning. Variety’s November 12, 2024 announcement identified Christopher McQuarrie as the director and co-writer of the Mission: Impossible film, with Tom Cruise and McQuarrie as producers. Kosinski’s name belongs to the older film only.
- Tom Cruise is the one link between the two titles. He stars in both, but in different roles and different productions.
What Oblivion is
Oblivion is a 2013 science-fiction film directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Tom Cruise. Tom’s Guide describes Cruise’s character, Jack Harper, as a repairman on an abandoned Earth in 2077, where a rescued woman disrupts his understanding of his mission. The cast also includes Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Melissa Leo, and Zoë Bell.
Prologue’s project page, which credits Universal Pictures as the studio, describes Harper repairing downed drones on an evacuated Earth after a decades-long alien war. Prologue also worked on the film’s main-title and main-on-end sequences, including the TET, an AI-administered space station in the story.

What The Final Reckoning is
Variety reported on November 12, 2024 that “The Final Reckoning” had become the official title of Mission: Impossible 8, which had originally been planned as Dead Reckoning Part Two. The same report listed a May 23, 2025 release date. That date reflects the schedule at the time of the announcement. It is not a current scheduling claim, and the sources available here do not confirm the film’s later release history beyond that.

Worldwide gross is total ticket revenue across all territories and is not profit. A film’s share of that revenue goes to theaters and distributors, and production and marketing costs are not counted in the headline total. A higher gross therefore says little about whether either film made money for its backers, and none of the sources here give budgets or net returns for either title.
How the films were received
Tom’s Guide’s June 5, 2025 article described Oblivion‘s reception as mixed. It cited a 53% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and summarized praise for the production values and Cruise’s performance, alongside criticism of the writing. That is a snapshot from June 2025, not a current rating.

Is Oblivion worth watching now?
If you want the film itself rather than the headline, the reception described above is the most useful guide: strong visuals and a committed lead performance, with a script that critics found weaker. Before you watch, check current availability in your country, because streaming rights change by territory and date, and the sources here do not establish where the film is streaming today.
