If you missed a Nintendo Switch 2 preorder, Best Buy and Walmart were two retailers to try on launch day, June 5, 2025. Best Buy announced limited walk-in stock at nearly all stores opening at midnight; Walmart was also reported as offering another chance to buy. Neither announcement guaranteed a console at any particular location. The launch has passed, so this is a historical account—not a guide to current availability.
Where could you try to buy a Switch 2 on launch day?
| Retailer | What was announced or reported | What it did not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Best Buy | Best Buy said nearly all stores would open at midnight on June 5, 2025, with a limited number of consoles, games, and accessories for walk-in customers. See Best Buy’s May 29 announcement. | It did not promise stock at every store or guarantee that a customer arriving would be able to buy a console. |
| Walmart | The Associated Press reported that Walmart said customers would have another chance to buy on June 5, and included Walmart among retailers selling the system in its launch-day report. | The reporting did not establish a store-by-store stock commitment or a specific opening time. |
Best Buy’s announcement was the more specific walk-in plan: it said, “Best Buy stores will also have a limited number of consoles, games and accessories available for walk-in customers.” That described the planned offer, not guaranteed inventory at a local store.

Why launch-day stock was uncertain
The preorder period had already shown how quickly availability could change. The AP reported that Walmart preorders sold out quickly and that listings became unavailable at Target and Best Buy. Those reports indicate a fast-moving preorder rush; they do not establish how many units any retailer had in stock.
Nintendo announced the console’s U.S. release for June 5, 2025, with a suggested retail price of $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle. Those were U.S. launch prices, not a statement of current prices or availability. Nintendo’s launch announcement also noted the release date.

What happened after launch
Nintendo announced that more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units had sold worldwide during the four days after launch. That was a global early-sales figure, not a U.S. inventory count and not a measure of how many units Best Buy or Walmart had on launch day. See Nintendo’s June 11, 2025 release.

No. The recommendations above concern the one-day launch on June 5, 2025. They do not establish current inventory, seller conditions, or prices. For a present-day purchase, check the retailer’s current listing and local availability directly, and confirm the seller and price before buying.
