Missed Tax Day? How to Contact the IRS and File Your 2025 Return

If you requested an extension on time, most calendar-year filers have until October 15, 2026 to file their 2025 federal income tax return. If you did not, file as soon as possible. An extension does not give you extra time to pay: unpaid tax was generally due April 15, 2026, and penalties and interest may accrue. For individual tax questions, call the IRS at 800-829-1040, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.

First, work out which deadline applies

For most people who file on a calendar year, the deadline to file and pay 2025 federal income tax was April 15, 2026. If you requested a filing extension by that date, the extended filing deadline is October 15, 2026. The IRS describes the October date as a filing extension, not a payment extension. IRS filing deadlines and IRS extension guidance explain the usual rules.

If you did not request an extension by the original deadline, you generally cannot newly request one now for that missed deadline. The IRS advises taxpayers who missed the deadline to file as soon as possible. Disaster relief, certain military situations, and qualifying taxpayers abroad may have different deadlines; check the IRS rules for your circumstances rather than assuming October 15 applies to you. IRS Tax Tip 2026-32.

What an extension does—and does not—do

An extension gives eligible filers more time to submit the return. It does not postpone the tax payment deadline. The IRS says, “An extension provides extra time to file, not additional time to pay.” If you owed tax, payment was generally due April 15, even if you had an extension to file. Penalties and interest can accrue on an unpaid balance.

The IRS lists an average wait of 15 minutes for post-filing-season calls from May through December; some lines may take longer. Waits are typically shorter Wednesday through Friday, and a callback may be offered on many toll-free lines when estimated waits exceed 15 minutes and a representative can return the call during business hours. Neither a shorter wait nor a callback is guaranteed.

If you cannot use Free File or need hands-on tax preparation, the right alternative depends on your return and circumstances. IRS phone assistance is not the same as preparing a return or receiving individualized professional tax advice.

Use online IRS tools for account and filing tasks

For common tasks, IRS.gov may be more direct than calling. The IRS site offers filing guidance, account access, transcripts, payment options, and help topics. Use the official IRS.gov site rather than searching for unofficial contact details. If your question concerns personal account information, use an IRS account service or call the verified IRS number above.

Quick Recap

What to do next

  1. Confirm your deadline. Determine whether you timely requested an extension or qualify for a separate relief rule.
  2. File the return. If the deadline has passed and you have not filed, submit it as soon as possible; check whether Free File remains available for your return.
  3. Pay what you can. If you owe and cannot pay the full balance, pay as much as possible promptly.
  4. Contact the IRS through the appropriate route. Call 800-829-1040 for individual tax questions, use IRS.gov for self-service, or schedule a Taxpayer Assistance Center appointment if the service is offered locally.
