Its announcement said about 300 employees would be affected—not that all 300 would be dismissed—and that employees would be prioritised for redeployment. MinRes announced a restart in May 2026; it later reported first concentrate in June and an initial shipment in July.
What happened at Bald Hill?
Bald Hill is a lithium mine about 50 kilometres southeast of Kambalda in Western Australia’s Goldfields region. MinRes announced on 13 November 2024 that it would transition the operation to care and maintenance after a strategic review and a prolonged period of low spodumene concentrate prices. The company said mining and mobile maintenance would cease that week, with the plant and accommodation village expected to cease temporarily by early December.
Care and maintenance means suspending normal production while retaining and looking after the site and equipment. It is different from announcing that a mine has permanently closed. MinRes’s Bald Hill project page describes an open-pit operation and a processing plant that includes crushing and dense media separation equipment. The operation is 100% owned and operated by MinRes, and its product is transported by road to the Port of Esperance. MinRes identifies the Ngadju People as Traditional Owners of the land.
What did “300 jobs to go” mean?
MinRes said approximately 300 employees would be impacted by the 2024 transition. In the same announcement, it said all Bald Hill employees would be prioritised for redeployment across the company’s other Western Australian operations. The wording does not establish that 300 people were made redundant, nor does the available information establish the eventual individual employment outcomes.

The workforce figures reflect different points in the mine’s history and should not be read as a direct count of net jobs created or lost. In its 2026 restart announcement, MinRes said the restart was expected to create approximately 370 jobs, including around 110 roles to be filled through redeployment from other MinRes operations; it said those redeployed positions would be backfilled.
Why did MinRes restart the mine?
MinRes announced the restart on 19 May 2026, describing a sustained recovery in lithium prices as the reason conditions had changed. Managing Director Chris Ellison said, “With strong and sustained demand for spodumene concentrate driving a significant recovery in prices, the time is right to restart operations at Bald Hill.” This is the company’s stated rationale, not independent verification of market conditions.

What is the mine’s current reported status?
MinRes’s Q4 FY26 report, published 29 July 2026, says operations restarted in May 2026, first concentrate was produced in June, and an initial shipment took place in July. Those are reported restart milestones; they do not mean the operation had already reached its stated full production rate.
MinRes said the restart was expected to produce approximately 165,000 dry metric tonnes a year of 5.1% spodumene concentrate, equivalent to 140,000 dry metric tonnes a year at SC6 grade. Its Q4 FY26 report said the ramp-up to 140,000 dry metric tonnes a year SC6 was on track for Q2 FY27. That timing was a company-reported expectation, not confirmation that the target had been achieved.

What the announcements do—and do not—show
- The 2024 decision was presented by MinRes as a response to low spodumene concentrate prices; the 2026 restart was presented as a response to a sustained price recovery.
- The 2024 employee figure describes employees impacted, alongside a redeployment priority. It is not evidence that 300 employees were dismissed.
- The restart announcement’s workforce estimate and production capacity are company forecasts. The later quarterly report confirms restart activity and early shipment milestones, but not achievement of full planned capacity.
