Schwartz Farms began as a family crop operation near Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, and grew into a pork producer whose business model relied in part on independent family farms. A 2017 profile traced that evolution from brothers John and Joe Schwartz’s first hog-finishing barn to a much larger network of growers. The company still describes itself as family-owned; its current scale figures are published by the company and should be read separately from the historical figures in that profile.
How Schwartz Farms entered pork production
Brothers John and Joe Schwartz founded Schwartz Farms in 1978 as a crop farm, according to Successful Farming’s May 1, 2017 profile. They grew corn and soybeans near Sleepy Eye. In 1981, they bought a 700-head finishing barn, adding hog production to the farm.
The profile says the company pioneered what it described as Minnesota’s first farrow-to-wean contract in the early 1990s. That was a reported historical milestone, not independently confirmed in the company’s current materials.
Why family growers mattered to the business
The 2017 account describes independent family farms as a substantial part of Schwartz Farms’ production model. At that time, more than 125 independent family farm contractors housed and fed about two-thirds of the company’s pigs. John Schwartz said he felt “a tremendous amount of responsibility toward those people” he had recruited as growers.

That relationship gave the family-first theme a practical dimension: the company’s growth depended not only on the founding family but also on independent farm families raising pigs under contract. Today, Schwartz Farms says it partners with employees, growers, and rural communities, and its history page reports more than 300 independent farm families. Those are current company-published descriptions and figures, not an independent audit.
How the company’s reported scale changed
The 2017 profile described growth in sow numbers, while Schwartz Farms’ current history page uses annual marketed pigs and other operating measures. These figures track different things and come from different sources, so they should not be treated as a direct like-for-like comparison.

The company’s history page also says its production is enough to feed 11 million people annually. That is a company claim; the page does not provide the calculation or methodology.
What “family first” means in the company’s own account
John Schwartz’s comments in the 2017 profile connect the family identity to obligations beyond ownership. His description of responsibility toward growers makes clear that the contractor network was not merely a production statistic: it represented relationships the company believed it had to maintain as it expanded.

The current company history credits the founders’ parents, Jim and Irene Schwartz, with instilling values carried from a family dairy operation into the pork business. It quotes Joe and John Schwartz: “In a family business like ours, it’s difficult to know where to begin! But accolades must be given to our parents, Jim and Irene Schwartz, to instilling in us values. The values held true to a family dairy operation in the ‘good ole days,’ and they hold true today in a progressive family pork operation.”
What the 2017 account does—and does not—say about the market
The 2017 profile said Schwartz Farms sold hogs to Midwest packers and was not itself in packing. John Schwartz also spoke then about price discovery and whether producers could receive an equitable share of the pork cutout. Those remarks describe his perspective and the company’s arrangements at the time; they do not establish its current packing relationships or current market position.
