Mike Whitaker said his tenure as Federal Aviation Administration administrator would end January 20, 2025—the day Donald Trump took office. Whitaker announced the date in a December 12, 2024 letter to FAA employees. Bryan Bedford later became the agency’s administrator; the FAA’s leadership page updated October 1, 2026, lists Bedford in that role.

When did Mike Whitaker say he would leave the FAA?

Whitaker’s letter set January 20, 2025, as the end of his tenure. He wrote: “This has been the best and most challenging job of my career, and I wanted you to hear directly from me that my tenure will come to a close on January 20, 2025.” The letter announced the timing but did not give a personal reason for his departure. FAA letter to employees, December 12, 2024.

Whitaker had become FAA administrator in October 2023. The Associated Press reported that the Senate confirmed him by a 98-0 vote. Associated Press coverage.

What happened during the leadership transition?

  • January 10, 2025: Whitaker said Deputy Administrator Katie Thomson’s final day would be January 10 and that Mark House, the FAA’s assistant administrator for finance and management, would act as deputy administrator.
  • January 20, 2025: Whitaker’s stated final day coincided with Trump’s inauguration. A White House announcement named Judith Kaleta acting secretary of transportation; it did not name an acting FAA administrator. White House acting-leadership announcement.
  • July 10, 2025: The FAA announced Bryan Bedford as its new administrator and said Chris Rocheleau, who had served as acting administrator, transitioned to deputy administrator. FAA announcement on Bedford.

House’s interim deputy role was separate from the permanent administrator appointment. Bedford’s later appointment filled the administrator role; Rocheleau’s acting service was an interim step.

Did Whitaker explain why he was leaving?

No reason appears in the December 12 letter. Its timing meant the departure cleared the way for Trump to select an FAA chief, as the Associated Press noted, but that political effect does not establish Whitaker’s private motive.
