Salary archives estimate that Álvaro Negredo was Middlesbrough’s highest-paid player in 2016/17, while Matt Targett tops the 2025/26 estimate. The figures are reported weekly wage estimates, not club-confirmed payroll disclosures. The 2024/25 leader is disputed: Salary Sport names Matthew Targett, while SalaryLeaks names Kelechi Iheanacho.
Highest-paid Middlesbrough players by season
This list covers the ten completed seasons from 2016/17 through 2025/26. It excludes 2026/27, which was underway on 8 October 2026. Amounts are the weekly estimates reported by the named archives; they are not verified individual salary disclosures.

How to interpret these wage figures
They are estimates, not confirmed salaries
Salary Sport describes its pages as season wage archives and reports the amounts it holds for players. Those pages are not club-issued payroll records. SalaryLeaks is also the source for the 2025/26 figure. Treat the listed values as source-attributed estimates rather than confirmed pay.
The 2024/25 leader cannot be settled from these reports
Salary Sport reports Matthew Targett at £79,000 per week, while SalaryLeaks reports Kelechi Iheanacho at £75,000 per week. The pages do not explain their differing assumptions well enough to resolve the discrepancy, so neither estimate supports a definitive winner.

Weekly wage is not total compensation
The figures are weekly wage estimates. The consulted archives do not establish whether bonuses or loan-related payment arrangements are included, so the amounts should not be treated as complete compensation totals.

Salary Sport supplies the estimates for 2016/17 through 2023/24; the 2024/25 entry has competing reports from Salary Sport and SalaryLeaks; and SalaryLeaks supplies the 2025/26 estimate. Comparisons across seasons should be read as comparisons of these archives’ reported estimates, not audited changes in players’ actual pay.
