Microsoft rose from No. 18 in the 2024 Axios Harris Poll 100 to No. 3 in 2025, making it the highest-ranked technology company in the survey. The company’s biggest gains came in Trust, Character, and Citizenship—categories that are compatible with a stronger security and accountability story.
But the poll measured broad U.S. public perceptions, not cybersecurity performance. Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative may have contributed to the rebound, yet the data cannot prove that security alone caused it. Microsoft remained No. 3 overall and the highest-ranked technology company in the 2026 poll, although the methodology changed.
What the 2025 poll said about Microsoft
Microsoft ranked No. 3 overall in the 2025 Axios Harris Poll 100, behind Trader Joe’s and Patagonia. That made it the highest-ranked technology company included in the broad corporate-reputation survey.
Microsoft’s technology-related peers placed lower: Samsung ranked No. 6, Nvidia No. 8, Nintendo No. 12, and Amazon No. 19. These companies do not all compete with Microsoft in the same markets; the comparison simply shows where they appeared in the overall reputation ranking.

The movement was substantial:
- 2024: No. 18 overall
- 2025: No. 3 overall
- Overall improvement: 15 places
- Trust: up 35 places
- Character: up 32 places
- Citizenship: up 27 places
The 2025 poll assessed nine qualities: Character, Citizenship, Culture, Ethics, Growth, Products and Services, Trajectory, Trust, and Vision. It was therefore a reputation ranking—not a security ranking, customer-satisfaction survey, or independent audit. GeekWire reported the ranking and category movements.
Why security became part of Microsoft’s reputation story
Microsoft’s rebound followed a difficult period for its security reputation. Between 2022 and early 2024, incidents involving groups and campaigns associated with Lapsus$, Storm-0558, and Midnight Blizzard affected Microsoft, its customers, or related corporate and cloud systems. The incidents also generated criticism and heightened scrutiny of Microsoft’s security practices.
The timing is important, but it needs to be interpreted carefully. The incidents and the 2024 reputation decline occurred during roughly the same period, and the original analysis argues that the security fallout contributed to Microsoft’s lower standing. That is a plausible explanation, not a finding established by the poll itself.
Public reputation can respond to many factors at once: media coverage, political attention, customer experiences, corporate communications, product familiarity, and the perceived performance of competing brands. A technical incident may damage trust, but a survey cannot identify precisely which event—or which corporate response—changed respondents’ views.

Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative
Microsoft announced its Secure Future Initiative in November 2023 as a multiyear effort to make security a more central part of how the company designs, builds, tests, and operates products and services.
Microsoft describes the initiative as being organized around security principles, foundations, and prioritized pillars. Its stated foundations include:
- A security-first culture
- Stronger security governance
- Continuous security improvement
- Standardized security practices and “paved paths” for engineering teams
The initiative’s stated priorities include protecting identities and secrets, isolating tenants and systems, improving resilience, reducing the impact of incidents, strengthening engineering and operational practices, and applying secure-by-design principles. Microsoft also says it is improving transparency and accountability around progress.
Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative overview is useful evidence of the company’s commitments and reported program structure. It is not, by itself, independent proof that every objective has been achieved or that Microsoft has eliminated systemic security weaknesses.

What evidence supports the security explanation?
The case for a security-related contribution to the reputation rebound rests on three observations.
- The initiative preceded the rebound. SFI was announced in November 2023, Microsoft ranked No. 18 in 2024, and it rose to No. 3 in 2025. That chronology is consistent with a relationship, but it does not prove one.
- The largest gains were reputation dimensions associated with confidence and responsibility. Trust, Character, and Citizenship improved most sharply. Those categories fit a security-and-accountability narrative, although they are not technical security measurements.
- Microsoft publicly emphasized engineering and governance changes. Its materials describe work involving identity protections, tenant isolation, vulnerability processes, hardware security, secure-by-design practices, and progress reporting.
These points provide circumstantial support for the idea that security and trust-rebuilding helped Microsoft’s image. They do not establish that SFI alone produced the ranking change.
Security was probably not the only factor
Microsoft’s public reputation reflects much more than incident response. Respondents may also associate the company with Windows, Microsoft 365, Azure, Xbox, LinkedIn, enterprise technology, artificial intelligence, and long-standing customer and partner relationships.
Microsoft’s AI investment and partnerships may have strengthened its growth and trajectory narrative. Familiarity with its products may also make the company more visible than less widely used technology firms. Meanwhile, changing news cycles or controversies affecting other companies can alter a company’s relative position in a ranking.

For that reason, the most defensible conclusion is not that “security caused Microsoft’s rise.” It is that Microsoft’s security response was a plausible contributor to a broader reputation recovery, particularly in areas involving trust, character, and corporate responsibility.
What the poll can—and cannot—tell customers
| The poll can indicate | The poll cannot establish |
|---|---|
| How favorably highly visible companies are viewed by the U.S. public | Whether Microsoft is the safest technology company |
| Changes in broad perceptions of trust and corporate character | Whether Microsoft passed an independent security audit |
| That Microsoft’s public reputation improved sharply in 2025 | Which specific SFI control changed public opinion |
| That reputation may have business relevance | That the ranking directly increased sales, renewals, or market share |
Enterprise buyers should continue to evaluate security through independent assurance, contractual commitments, vulnerability history, incident disclosures, architecture reviews, customer references, and the organization’s own risk requirements. A high reputation score cannot replace due diligence.
The survey also reflects U.S. public perception. It should not automatically be treated as a global view or as a direct measure of how regulators, developers, security professionals, or every Microsoft customer evaluates the company.

The recovery was not immediately reversed. In the 2026 Axios Harris Poll 100, published May 19, 2026, Microsoft again ranked No. 3 overall and remained the highest-ranked technology company, behind Trader Joe’s and Patagonia.

That continued position is consistent with sustained strong public standing. It should not be treated as a perfectly comparable repeat of the 2025 measurement, however. The 2026 model added Relevance and removed Growth, Innovation, Values, and Good Causes from the previous framework, while retaining foundational measures including Trust, Character, and Business Trajectory.
In other words, the 2026 result supports the view that Microsoft’s reputation remained strong, but changed methodology makes detailed category-by-category year-over-year comparisons unreliable.
What other companies can learn
- Security failures can become brand failures. Customers and the public may judge how a company responds, not just whether an incident occurred.
- Security needs senior ownership. Governance, investment, engineering standards, and accountability must support public commitments.
- Communications cannot substitute for remediation. A credible recovery requires technical and operational changes, not only better messaging.
- Progress should be explained consistently. Customers, employees, partners, and regulators need understandable evidence of what changed.
- Reputation recovery does not mean risk has disappeared. A company can be viewed more favorably while serious vulnerabilities and operational challenges remain.
- Security investment should connect to measurable outcomes. Organizations should track controls, resilience, response times, exposure reduction, and customer impact—not reputation alone.
What this means for Microsoft customers and investors
For customers, Microsoft’s improved reputation may be a positive signal that the company recognizes security as a business priority. It is not a substitute for reviewing the specific Microsoft products, configurations, data flows, identity controls, and contractual protections relevant to an organization.
For investors and communications teams, the ranking illustrates the potential business value of security investment. Trust can affect procurement confidence, partner relationships, recruiting, regulatory goodwill, and a company’s ability to recover after an incident. But the poll does not demonstrate a direct financial return from SFI.
The practical conclusion is balanced: Microsoft has documented a substantial security initiative, reported ongoing progress, and maintained a high reputation ranking. Customers should still test those claims against independent evidence and their own risk tolerance.
