Microsoft says it operates a data centre at Grange Castle in Dublin and is planning another in County Kildare. Separately, a planning-register entry records an extension of permission for two proposed Grange Castle facilities, DUB14 and DUB15, granted on 21 July 2026. The available records do not establish that the Kildare plan and the DUB14/DUB15 proposal are the same project.

What Microsoft has confirmed about Ireland

Microsoft’s Ireland community page identifies Grange Castle, Dublin, as a location where the company operates a datacentre and says: “We are planning a datacentre in County Kildare.” The page does not provide application details or a project schedule for the Kildare plan.

That statement is distinct from the Grange Castle proposal recorded in a planning-register summary. Without a link between the records, it would be inaccurate to describe DUB14 and DUB15 as the Kildare project, or to apply the planning-register status to the Kildare plan.

What the Grange Castle planning record says

The planning-register entry describes two proposed two-storey data centres with mezzanines, DUB14 and DUB15, alongside a central administration building of one to four storeys. It locates the proposal at Grange Castle Business Park, Nangor Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22. The summary reports that an extension of permission was granted on 21 July 2026. This is a register summary; the full council application file is needed for the underlying application documents and conditions. Planning-register entry

The register also records a separate application for 13 temporary replacement generators for DUB15, refused on 26 November 2024. Its summary says the generators were proposed to operate the data hall until a permitted Gas Networks Ireland skid was constructed and operational. That refusal alone does not establish the site’s current power arrangements or what infrastructure was ultimately built. Planning-register entry

What is known about jobs and construction

Microsoft’s October 2025 Ireland fact sheet says its Grange Castle facilities employed approximately 400 people as of 2025. The same fact sheet estimates that a typical new datacentre build would require 350 construction roles and approximately 2.2 million work hours. Those are company-wide typical-build estimates, not confirmed staffing or work-hour forecasts for the Kildare plan or DUB14/DUB15. Microsoft Ireland fact sheet, October 2025

How to read the two project references

Reference Location What the source establishes
Microsoft’s Ireland community page County Kildare Microsoft says it is planning a datacentre; application particulars and schedule are not stated on the page.
Planning-register summary Grange Castle Business Park, Dublin 22 Describes DUB14 and DUB15 with an administration building; reports an extension of permission granted on 21 July 2026.

The distinction matters for anyone tracking the project’s local effects, construction timing, or approvals: the records establish different locations and different levels of project detail. Neither source, as cited here, connects the two references.

What remains unclear

The exact project meant by the broad phrase “Microsoft Dublin data center plans” cannot be identified from these records alone. Microsoft’s page confirms a Kildare plan but gives no application particulars; the planning summary provides a dated permission-extension status for the Grange Castle proposal. A definitive connection or current project-specific status would require the relevant announcement or full council file.
