Microsoft announced CoreAI – Platform and Tools on January 13, 2025, bringing together engineering teams to build an end-to-end Copilot and AI stack for creating and running AI applications and agents. CEO Satya Nadella named Jay Parikh as its executive vice president. Later Microsoft statements in March and June 2026 add context, but do not provide a complete, current CoreAI organization chart or prove that the reorganization delivered measurable results.

What Microsoft announced in January 2025

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced CoreAI – Platform and Tools as a new engineering organization on January 13, 2025. He described its purpose as connecting work across the AI stack, from infrastructure and platforms to developer tools and Copilot. Nadella framed the move as a response to Microsoft’s view that applications would become more model-forward and agentic; that was the company’s strategic rationale, not a proven forecast.

The launch announcement said CoreAI would bring together Dev Div, AI Platform, and selected Office of the CTO teams: AI Supercomputer, AI Agentic Runtimes, and Engineering Thrive. Its stated mission was to build the end-to-end Copilot and AI stack so Microsoft’s first-party and third-party customers could build and run AI apps and agents. It was also tasked with building out GitHub Copilot. Nadella’s January 13, 2025 announcement gives the initial scope and leadership details.

Who was named to lead CoreAI

Nadella named Jay Parikh executive vice president of CoreAI. Under the initial structure described in the announcement, Eric Boyd, Jason Taylor, Julia Liuson, Tim Bozarth, and their respective teams were to report to Parikh. Nadella also said Parikh would work with other senior leaders on performance and efficiency across Microsoft’s technology stack and lead company-wide developer productivity and Engineering Thrive work.

These are the reporting relationships stated at launch, not a verified current org chart. A later Microsoft article dated June 2, 2026, identifies Parikh as EVP of CoreAI, but does not enumerate the full organization beneath him.

What the agentic AI strategy meant

In Nadella’s account, agentic applications would need memory, entitlements, and the ability to take actions, with capabilities adapted for performance and safety across roles, business processes, and industries. He described an AI-first stack with new user-interface patterns; runtimes for building and orchestrating multiple agents; and a reimagined management and observability layer.

Microsoft positioned Azure as AI infrastructure, with Azure AI Foundry, GitHub, and VS Code among the platform and developer tools above it. The organizational logic was to connect those layers rather than treat Copilot, developer tools, and AI infrastructure as separate efforts. GitHub Copilot was both part of the remit and a potential feedback loop for the platform roadmap. That was the intended design; the launch announcement did not report a measured before-and-after effect.

What the announcement does—and does not—show

CoreAI was an organizational and strategic move: Microsoft grouped teams spanning infrastructure, AI platforms, developer tools, and Copilot around a broad effort to help customers build and operate AI applications and agents. Microsoft’s later descriptions show that its public framing continued to emphasize agent platforms, governance, and Copilot organization.
