Microsoft’s fiscal 2023 fourth quarter was highly profitable, but its “blockbuster” label needs context: cloud and business software grew strongly while Windows OEM, devices and Xbox hardware weakened. For the quarter ended June 30, 2023, revenue was $56.2 billion and net income was $20.1 billion. The results were announced July 25, 2023; they are historical fiscal 2023 results, not a current earnings report.

What period did Microsoft report?

Microsoft’s fiscal fourth quarter and fiscal year both ended June 30, 2023. The company announced the results on July 25, 2023. Microsoft’s fiscal fourth quarter is not the same as calendar-year second quarter, so the figures below refer specifically to Microsoft’s fiscal reporting period. Microsoft’s earnings release provides the reported figures and accounting detail.

Why did the quarter look exceptional?

Revenue rose 8% year over year to $56.189 billion, while operating income increased 18% to $24.254 billion and net income climbed 20% to $20.081 billion. Diluted earnings per share were $2.69, up 21%. Revenue growth was solid rather than explosive; the faster growth in operating income and net income shows that profit expanded much more quickly than sales.

Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $30.3 billion, up 21% year over year. Office 365, Azure and Dynamics 365 helped anchor growth in recurring cloud and business-software services. Microsoft also returned $9.7 billion to shareholders through share repurchases and dividends during the quarter. That return is part of the shareholder picture, but it is distinct from operating performance and should not be mistaken for revenue growth.

How did Microsoft’s business segments perform?

Segment Fiscal Q4 revenue Year-over-year change What stood out
Productivity and Business Processes $18.291 billion +10% Office Commercial products and cloud services +12%; Office 365 Commercial +15%; Dynamics products and cloud services +19%; Dynamics 365 +26%; LinkedIn +5%. Microsoft 365 consumer subscribers totaled 67.0 million.
Intelligent Cloud $23.993 billion +15% Server products and cloud services +17%; Azure and other cloud services +26%. This was the largest segment by revenue.
More Personal Computing $13.905 billion -4% Windows OEM -12%; devices -20%; Windows Commercial products and cloud services +2%; Xbox content and services +5%; search and news advertising, excluding traffic-acquisition costs, +8%.

The segment figures show why the headline cannot be read as a clean sweep. Productivity software and cloud infrastructure expanded, but More Personal Computing contracted. Growth in Xbox content and services did not mean Xbox hardware also grew.

What do the cloud figures mean?

Microsoft Cloud and Intelligent Cloud are different measures. Microsoft Cloud is a broad revenue measure spanning multiple cloud products and services, including offerings such as Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365 and Azure. Intelligent Cloud is a reported business segment. Neither figure should be treated as a synonym for Azure alone.

  • 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
  • 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop

The reported 26% growth figure was for “Azure and other cloud services,” not for standalone Azure revenue. It signals strong demand across that broader category, but the release does not isolate Azure’s revenue from the other services included in the measure.

Was this an AI earnings report?

AI was a prominent strategic theme, but Microsoft did not disclose a separate AI-revenue figure in the earnings release. Azure growth is not, by itself, evidence of how much revenue came directly from generative AI. The quarter’s reported financial performance was attributed to established cloud, Office, server and business-software businesses; AI was part of the company’s platform positioning, not a separately measured revenue line in these results.

What did the full fiscal year show?

Fiscal 2023 measure Reported result Year-over-year change
Revenue $211.915 billion +7% GAAP
Operating income $88.523 billion GAAP +6%
Adjusted operating income $89.694 billion +8%
Net income $72.361 billion GAAP -1%
Adjusted net income $73.307 billion +6%
Diluted earnings per share $9.68 GAAP Approximately flat
Adjusted diluted earnings per share $9.81 +7%

Fiscal-year GAAP net income fell slightly, even as adjusted net income increased. Microsoft said its fiscal 2023 GAAP results included a $1.2 billion second-quarter charge associated with severance, hardware-portfolio impairment and lease consolidation. Adjusted results exclude specified items under the company’s non-GAAP methodology; they are supplemental measures, not replacements for GAAP results. The release also presents constant-currency growth figures to show results without foreign-exchange effects, but those are supplemental comparisons rather than the reported GAAP growth rates.

Was “blockbuster” justified?

As a description of Microsoft’s quarterly profit growth and cloud momentum, “blockbuster” is understandable: Q4 operating income rose 18%, net income rose 20%, and Microsoft Cloud grew 21%. As a description of every business or of the full-year GAAP result, it overstates the case. Windows OEM, devices and More Personal Computing declined, Xbox hardware was weaker, and full-year GAAP net income was down 1%. Paul Thurrott’s contemporaneous article used the phrase as an earnings characterization, not an accounting category: “Microsoft Reports Blockbuster Quarter, Blockbuster Year,” published July 25, 2023.
