Microsoft announced the redevelopment of its original Redmond, Washington, headquarters on November 28, 2017—not in 2026. The proposal called for replacing 12 aging buildings with 18 new ones and creating workplace capacity for about 8,000 additional workers. Microsoft later revised the design to 17 new buildings. The multibillion-dollar project also promised renovated offices, underground parking, open space, sports facilities and a pedestrian-and-bicycle bridge to the future Redmond Technology light-rail station.
The project was a phased modernization of Microsoft’s roughly 500-acre headquarters, not a move away from the Seattle region. Major elements advanced, including the transit bridge, which opened in April 2024. Public sources do not establish a definitive 2026 closeout for every building, phase or worker-capacity target.
What Microsoft announced in 2017
Microsoft’s original announcement covered the older core of a campus that, according to contemporaneous coverage, contained about 125 buildings and 15 million square feet. The company proposed demolishing 12 older structures—many identified with the 1980s-era “X-Wing” design—and constructing 18 new buildings. The stated goal was to create room for approximately 8,000 additional workers.
That figure described planned capacity, not a guarantee of 8,000 net new hires. It also did not mean every position would be filled immediately. Microsoft framed the work as an investment in its existing headquarters and the Puget Sound region, while retaining other regional offices such as downtown Bellevue and Issaquah.

Why replace the original campus?
The older buildings were designed around individual offices and corridors typical of the 1980s. Microsoft said newer workplaces should support collaboration, informal interaction and more flexible ways of working. Rebuilding also offered the company a chance to use land it already owned more efficiently, modernize aging infrastructure, improve recruitment and retention amenities, and prepare for regional growth.
The project carried a symbolic purpose as well. Keeping the headquarters in Redmond signaled a continuing commitment to the Seattle-area technology ecosystem at a time when large employers were competing for major expansions elsewhere. The trade-off was giving up recognizable buildings associated with Microsoft’s formative years in exchange for a denser, more current workplace.

What was to be demolished and built?
| Element | Original or later description | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Older buildings removed | 12 | Original redevelopment proposal |
| New buildings | 18 initially; 17 in the revised design | Microsoft and the City of Redmond later described the project as a 17-building plan |
| Existing older office area removed | About 1.2 million square feet | Figure reported in 2017 coverage |
| New workspace | About 2.5 million square feet in the initial account; nearly 3 million square feet in Microsoft’s later description | Different project-stage descriptions |
| Existing workspace renovated | 6.7 million square feet | Included in Microsoft’s modernization program |
| Added worker capacity | About 8,000 people | Planned workplace capacity, not confirmed net hiring |
The change from 18 to 17 buildings reflects an evolution in design during approval and planning, not two separate campuses. Microsoft’s 2018 update also said an additional existing structure would be deconstructed. The City of Redmond’s campus-refresh page describes the revised program as replacing 12 older office buildings with approximately 3 million square feet in 17 new buildings.

The plan reorganized offices into four- and five-story “villages,” placing buildings closer together to release more land for shared spaces. Planned features included:
- Underground parking instead of relying primarily on large surface lots.
- A central plaza of roughly two acres.
- Green space, walking and running trails, and pedestrian-oriented circulation.
- Soccer and cricket fields.
- Retail and restaurant space.
- Energy-efficiency and other sustainability improvements.
- A campus bridge for people walking or bicycling across State Route 520.
The original proposal said the plaza could hold approximately 8,000 to 12,000 people for large gatherings or performances. Microsoft also said the “Lake Bill” pond would remain. The pond, associated with Bill Gates’ former office in Building 4, became one of the few specifically identified pieces of campus lore to be preserved while the X-Wing buildings were replaced.

Why light rail and the bridge mattered
The redevelopment was tied to public transportation as well as private construction. Microsoft proposed a pedestrian-and-cyclist-only bridge over State Route 520 to connect the east and west portions of its campus, the regional trail system and the future Redmond Technology light-rail station. The company’s 2017 materials described $150 million in transportation infrastructure and a $33.3 million agreement with Sound Transit for station- and bridge-related work.

Timeline: announcement to the latest verified milestone
- November 28, 2017: Microsoft announces the Redmond campus redevelopment, including 12 demolitions, 18 proposed new buildings and capacity for about 8,000 additional workers.
- July 3, 2018: Microsoft names the design and construction teams and describes a revised 17-building plan with nearly 3 million square feet of new workspace. See the Microsoft announcement.
- January 2019: Microsoft’s retrospective identifies demolition and construction activity beginning during the modernization effort. The wording refers to activity in the project, not a final completion date for every phase.
- 2022–2023: Earlier schedules targeted completion and occupancy of new buildings around this period. Those were projections, not a documented final closeout.
- April 2024: The pedestrian bridge connecting the campuses and Redmond Technology Station opens.
- 2026: The City continues to list the campus refresh among its project materials. That listing does not, by itself, prove that construction is active or that every component is complete.
What changed after 2017?
The building count changed
The headline number moved from 18 proposed new buildings to 17 in Microsoft’s later design and the city’s project description. Any accurate account should identify both numbers and explain the revision.
Transit arrived later than first forecast
Light-rail service was initially discussed in the context of a 2023 arrival, while the bridge and station connection were documented as opening in 2024.
Office demand changed
The plan predates the COVID-19-era shift toward hybrid and remote work. The available official material confirms the original capacity target but does not establish how many of those spaces are occupied, whether all 17 buildings are fully operational, or whether Microsoft retained the original headcount assumptions.

Public closeout information is incomplete
Available city and Microsoft pages verify major design, construction and transit milestones, but they do not provide a single definitive 2026 accounting for every building, phase, occupancy level or remaining permit. A project-listing status should not be treated as proof of either completion or cancellation.
Why the redevelopment matters
Microsoft’s Redmond plan combined corporate real estate with regional urban development. It sought to replace inefficient offices, increase capacity on land the company already controlled and create a more walkable campus, while relying on public agencies and regional transit investment to improve access.
It also exposed a lasting tension between preservation and modernization. The X-Wing buildings were memorable symbols of early Microsoft, but the company considered their layout and infrastructure poorly suited to contemporary work. Preserving Lake Bill and adding public-facing trails, transit links and open space offered a selective way to retain history without preserving every structure.
The most accurate takeaway is therefore historical and qualified: Microsoft announced a major Redmond rebuild in 2017, revised the design from 18 to 17 new buildings, planned capacity for about 8,000 additional workers, and delivered at least the promised light-rail bridge by 2024. The sources do not support claiming that all original targets were either fully achieved or abandoned by 2026.
