Microsoft’s August 2022 Teams Rooms announcement introduced a free Basic license and set Pro at $40 per room per month. Those were announcement-era figures: Microsoft’s current US listing still shows Basic free for up to 25 rooms with certified equipment and Pro at $40 per room per month when billed yearly. The license is only part of the cost; a certified room system is required.
What Microsoft announced in 2022
Microsoft announced Teams Rooms Basic and Pro as successors to Teams Rooms Standard and Premium, with the change taking effect September 1, 2022, according to IT Pro’s August 18, 2022 report. The reported prices were:

The “price decrease” referred specifically to Pro’s reported $40 price compared with the legacy Premium plan’s reported $50 monthly price. It did not mean every organization’s total Teams Rooms bill went down: Basic did not include the cost of buying the room system, and Pro remained a paid license. The old Standard and Premium amounts are historical comparisons, not current prices for those legacy plans.
Microsoft’s partner-facing statement, reproduced in the IT Pro report, described the intended split: “The new licensing model will help improve the journey for your SMB customers with a low-friction path to the Teams Rooms solution at no cost (Teams Rooms Basic), increase sales and your monetization opportunities (Teams Rooms Pro), and clarify common questions about the use of user licenses, management value, and enhanced hybrid features.”

What Teams Rooms Basic and Pro cost now
Microsoft’s current US pricing page lists Teams Rooms Basic as free for up to 25 rooms with certified Teams hardware, and Teams Rooms Pro at $40 per room per month, billed yearly. The current UK listing gives Pro as £30.80 per room per month, paid yearly. Prices are region-specific, so check Microsoft’s local pricing page before budgeting outside the US or UK.
Microsoft’s current licensing guidance says an organization may assign up to 25 Basic licenses. Each Basic license covers one certified Teams Rooms system in a room. A room with multiple systems using one resource account requires Pro. Legacy licenses can remain in use until they expire; Microsoft recommends transitioning when they reach expiration.

Is Teams Rooms Basic really free?
Yes, the Basic license has no additional license charge when an organization uses eligible certified Teams Rooms equipment and stays within Microsoft’s 25-license limit. As Microsoft Learn puts it: “Microsoft Teams Rooms Basic provides core meeting experiences to organizations that purchase a certified Microsoft Teams Rooms system, at no additional cost.” The hardware itself is not free, and Basic is not a general free Teams license for an ordinary PC or any unqualified room setup.
