But this was a brand consolidation—not the return of MSN Messenger, MSN Search, Hotmail, or the full MSN product family of the 1990s.
Microsoft said the move would unify its content services under MSN and would not change their functionality. In practical terms, many users saw a familiar personalized news and information feed acquire a more familiar name.

What Microsoft actually changed
Microsoft confirmed in November 2024 that it was moving its content services back under the MSN brand after using Microsoft Start for much of the same experience since 2021. The company described the decision as an effort to simplify its offerings and said there would be no functional impact. Windows Central reported Microsoft’s announcement on November 11, 2024.

The visible change included a brighter, multicolor version of the recognizable MSN butterfly. The logo began appearing on MSN.com, in relevant Microsoft Edge new-tab experiences, and in Microsoft’s mobile content apps. Microsoft Start-related pages and links were also reported to redirect toward MSN.com, although rollout details could vary.

The important distinction is that Microsoft changed the identity attached to the service more than it changed the service itself.
Is Microsoft Start discontinued?
The safest description is that Microsoft substantially rolled back the Microsoft Start branding across its consumer content services. Microsoft did not present the move as a technical shutdown or a requirement for users to migrate to a new platform.
The personalized feed, news aggregation, recommendations, and Microsoft-account features broadly remained in place. Some users may still encounter “Start” in older documentation, support pages, URLs, or individual product surfaces. Labels may also differ by region, app version, browser, and device.
So “Microsoft Start is now MSN” is a reasonable shorthand for the consumer-facing rebrand, but “Microsoft Start is completely gone everywhere” is too absolute.

What changed for users?
- Branding: The MSN butterfly replaced Microsoft Start branding in parts of Microsoft’s content ecosystem.
- Edge: MSN branding returned to relevant new-tab and news-feed experiences.
- Mobile apps: Start-related news apps for Android and iOS adopted MSN branding where the update was available.
- Web access: MSN.com again became the clearer public-facing home for the service.
- Personalization: Existing content preferences and feed functionality were not supposed to require a new account or migration.
Microsoft’s current MSN overview says availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version. That explains why two users may see different labels or features, and why Edge, Windows, the MSN website, and mobile apps may not update simultaneously.
What did not come back?
The 2024 logo change did not revive the discontinued products historically associated with MSN.
| Legacy product | What the 2024 change means |
|---|---|
| MSN Messenger | It was not restored as part of the rebrand. |
| MSN Search | It was not brought back; Microsoft’s search engine is Bing. |
| MSN Hotmail | Hotmail was replaced by Outlook.com, although legacy email addresses can still exist. |
| MSN dial-up and older portal services | They were not revived by the new logo. |
MSN never completely disappeared. MSN.com remained online, and MSN continued to be associated with news, weather, finance, gaming, and other content services during the Microsoft Start period. The 2024 move was therefore a return to a familiar umbrella name, not a resurrection from zero.

In 2021, Microsoft rebranded much of its MSN news and content experience as Microsoft Start. The Start name was intended to describe a broader personalized feed and, according to the 2024 report, was explored as a possible umbrella for news, video, gaming, social features, and other consumer services.

That broader strategy did not become Microsoft’s dominant public-facing consumer identity. By late 2024, the established MSN name had advantages that Microsoft Start did not: stronger recognition, a direct connection to MSN.com, and a history of covering the company’s consumer content services.
Microsoft did not publish a detailed postmortem explaining the reversal. The strategic interpretation is straightforward: restoring MSN made it easier to use one recognizable name across the website, Edge feed, Windows surfaces, and mobile apps, while avoiding the cost and confusion of maintaining a newer name for substantially similar content experiences.
A short history of MSN
- 1995: Microsoft launched MSN as an online service associated with Windows 95.
- Late 1990s and 2000s: MSN became an umbrella for web portals, email, messaging, search, and other internet services.
- 2014: Microsoft presented a rebuilt, cross-device MSN content experience in its first look at the new MSN.
- 2021: Many content experiences adopted Microsoft Start branding.
- November 2024: Microsoft confirmed that its content services were moving back under MSN.
- August 2026: Microsoft continued to describe MSN as an active personalized content hub.
What MSN offers today
Microsoft’s current MSN page presents the service as more than a basic news homepage. Depending on the market, device, and browser, MSN can provide:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Personalized news and entertainment feeds
- Access through MSN.com
- Content in Microsoft Edge’s new-tab page
- Windows news and interest feeds or widgets
- A mobile MSN app
- Weather information
- Stock and finance tracking
- Short videos
- Copilot-related features, including Copilot Daily in supported contexts
- Newsletters such as MSN Daily, MSN Unfold, and MSN Finance
MSN also acts as a distribution and aggregation platform. Some stories come from content partners, and Microsoft Support notes that certain agreements may send readers to the originating publisher’s website. MSN is therefore not necessarily the original producer of every item displayed in its feed.

Do you need to do anything?
No action is required solely because of the rebrand. You can continue using MSN.com or the relevant feed in Edge, Windows, or a mobile app.
If you want preferences to follow you between devices, sign in with a Microsoft account. According to Microsoft’s MSN support documentation, an account can carry personalization across devices. Without signing in, some settings may be stored in browser cookies and can disappear when those cookies are deleted.
If your feed looks different, that does not necessarily mean you have a new version of Edge or a new MSN product. Recommendations, available controls, and displayed features can change with account status, cookies, region, device, browser version, and Microsoft’s rollout schedule.
Why the rebrand matters
Potential advantages
- Recognition: MSN is more familiar to many Windows and Microsoft users than Microsoft Start.
- Continuity: People who already know MSN.com may find the service easier to identify.
- Simpler naming: One name can cover the website, Edge feed, Windows experiences, and mobile app.
- Visual familiarity: The butterfly logo preserves a connection with Microsoft’s consumer-internet history.
Potential drawbacks
- Historical baggage: The MSN name can make users think of products that no longer exist.
- More confusion: Some people may incorrectly assume Messenger, Hotmail, or MSN Search are returning.
- Rebranding fatigue: Microsoft had already moved from MSN to Start and then reversed course.
- Limited practical change: A new name and logo do not by themselves indicate a major improvement to the feed.
The bottom line on Microsoft’s MSN revival
Microsoft did revive MSN as the primary brand for its personalized content ecosystem in 2024, but it did not restore the old MSN network of internet products. The company largely moved the Microsoft Start identity back under the established MSN name, refreshed the butterfly logo, and kept the underlying content and personalization model broadly intact.

For users, the rebrand should be treated as a naming and visual-identity change. MSN remains an active hub for news, entertainment, weather, finance, video, and related features—but not a sign that Microsoft Messenger, MSN Search, or the original MSN portfolio has returned.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use MSN without Microsoft Edge?
Yes. Microsoft says MSN.com works in browsers including Chrome and Safari, although some integrated features are specific to Edge or Windows.
Is MSN the same thing as Bing?
No. MSN is a content and personalization hub. Bing is Microsoft’s search engine; the 2024 MSN rebrand did not replace or relaunch Bing.
Why might I still see Microsoft Start?
Older support pages, URLs, apps, or product surfaces may retain Start terminology, and updates can vary by region, device, browser, and rollout timing.
Is MSN available in every country?
Microsoft says feature availability and functionality vary by market, device type, and browser version, so the exact MSN experience is not universal.
