The figure was revenue—not earnings or profit. Net income rose 24% to $27.2 billion, operating income increased 23% to $34.3 billion, and diluted earnings per share reached $3.65, up 24%.
Why the $76.4 billion figure needs clarification
Revenue is the money a company brings in from sales before expenses. Operating income measures profit from operations; net income is profit after other items, interest and taxes. Earnings per share (EPS) expresses profit attributable to each diluted share. Microsoft’s 18% growth rate applies to revenue, while its reported net income and diluted EPS each increased 24%.
The results cover Microsoft’s fiscal fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, which ended June 30, 2025—not the second quarter of the calendar year. Microsoft announced them on July 30, 2025. Microsoft’s earnings release reports revenue growth of 18% as stated, or 17% in constant currency. Constant-currency comparisons recalculate results using comparable exchange rates to reduce the effect of currency movements; they do not replace the reported revenue figure.
Microsoft’s main fourth-quarter figures
| Measure | Q4 FY2025 result | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $76.4 billion | +18% reported; +17% in constant currency |
| Operating income | $34.3 billion | +23% |
| Net income | $27.2 billion | +24% |
| Diluted EPS | $3.65 | +24% |
| Microsoft Cloud revenue | $46.7 billion | +27% |
| Azure and other cloud services | Growth rate reported | +39% |
Because operating income, net income and EPS grew faster than revenue, Microsoft’s consolidated reported profitability strengthened relative to sales during the quarter. That does not mean every business line’s margins improved: Microsoft Cloud’s gross-margin percentage fell as the company invested in AI infrastructure and handled higher use of AI products.

Cloud was the clearest growth engine
Microsoft Cloud generated $46.7 billion in revenue, up 27%. Azure and other cloud services grew 39%, substantially faster than the company’s overall 18% revenue growth. Microsoft also said Azure surpassed $75 billion in annual revenue, with Azure revenue growing 34% for fiscal 2025. The $75 billion milestone is an annual figure, not revenue for the quarter.
Management presented cloud and AI as central to the quarter’s performance. CEO Satya Nadella highlighted Azure’s annual revenue milestone, while CFO Amy Hood pointed to Microsoft Cloud’s quarterly revenue and growth. The figures show strong demand for cloud services, but the release does not provide a complete standalone income statement for Azure AI, Copilot or other individual AI products. Product growth should not be mistaken for product-level profit.

More Personal Computing
More Personal Computing revenue was $13.5 billion, up 9%, with a more mixed performance across its businesses.
- Windows OEM and Devices: up 3%.
- Xbox content and services: up 13%.
- Search and news advertising, excluding traffic acquisition costs: up 21%.
Microsoft also cited gaming scale on its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call: 500 million monthly active users across platforms and devices, nearly $5 billion in annual Game Pass revenue, and more than 500 million hours of cloud gaming streamed during fiscal 2025. These figures offer context for the gaming business, but they do not alter the financial picture that cloud and enterprise services grew more quickly than the company overall. Microsoft’s earnings-call materials provide that management commentary.

AI growth comes with infrastructure costs
AI services require computing capacity, data centers and ongoing product development. Microsoft said Azure growth increased cost of revenue and that AI infrastructure investment and higher AI-product usage reduced Microsoft Cloud’s gross-margin percentage. Efficiency improvements in Azure and Microsoft 365 partly offset those pressures.
That creates two different but compatible readings of the quarter: Microsoft’s overall operating income and net income grew faster than revenue, while the gross-margin percentage for Microsoft Cloud declined. The company reported strong cloud growth, but its release does not establish the precise standalone profitability of AI products.

Fiscal-year results put the quarter in context
Microsoft’s fiscal year also ended June 30, 2025. For the full year, revenue reached $281.7 billion, up 15%; operating income was $128.5 billion, up 17%; net income was $101.8 billion, up 16%; and diluted EPS was $13.64, up 16%. These annual figures show broad growth across fiscal 2025, but they are full-year totals and growth rates, not substitutes for the fourth-quarter results.
Microsoft said it returned $9.4 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases during the fourth quarter. That is a capital-return figure, distinct from revenue and profit.
What the results leave to watch
The quarter was strong on reported sales and profit growth, but several questions remain relevant to investors assessing whether the pace can continue:
- Can Azure sustain rapid growth as its revenue base gets larger?
- Can Microsoft improve Microsoft Cloud margins while expanding AI infrastructure and usage?
- How quickly will AI products become material contributors to revenue and profit? The quarterly release does not disclose their standalone profitability.
- Will the more mixed performance in personal computing weigh on company-wide growth relative to cloud and enterprise services?
- How much future EPS growth will come from operating performance versus share repurchases?
The reported figures alone do not establish whether Microsoft beat analyst expectations or how investors valued the results; those claims require separate, contemporaneous market and consensus data.
