Microsoft Office LTSC 2024 is available, but it is not a normal retail version of Office or a universal replacement for Microsoft 365. It is a volume-licensed, fixed-feature desktop release for commercial and government organizations that need a controlled application baseline, restricted update cycles, or limited cloud dependence.
For most cloud-connected businesses, Microsoft 365 Apps is the more capable option. LTSC 2024 is mainly worth considering when stability, validation, device-based licensing, or restricted connectivity matters more than continuous features and collaboration services.

What Office LTSC 2024 actually is
LTSC means Long-Term Servicing Channel. Office LTSC 2024 is Microsoft’s current on-premises Office release for commercial and government customers. The “2024” label identifies the release generation; it does not mean the software will receive new features throughout 2024 and beyond.
Microsoft describes LTSC as a locked-in-time release. It receives security and quality updates, but it does not receive the continuing feature updates delivered to Microsoft 365 Apps. It is obtained through volume licensing, typically through Microsoft’s commercial licensing programs or an authorized licensing partner.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Office Apps | Includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with ease.
- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- Consider Upgrading to Microsoft 365 | Get premium benefits with a Microsoft 365 subscription, including ongoing updates, advanced security, and access to premium versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more, plus 1TB cloud storage per person and multi-device support for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
That makes it different from Office Home 2024, Office Home & Business 2024, Microsoft 365 Apps, and broader Microsoft 365 business or enterprise subscriptions. A small business looking for a conventional consumer or retail Office purchase should not assume that LTSC is available through the same buying channel.
Who should use Office LTSC 2024?
LTSC 2024 is a strong candidate when an organization needs to keep a validated Office version unchanged for years. Typical examples include:
- Regulated environments that require a controlled software baseline.
- Factory-floor, laboratory, medical, point-of-sale, kiosk, or embedded-use devices.
- Shared or dedicated computers licensed by device rather than individual user.
- Networks with restricted or intermittent connectivity.
- Systems whose macros, add-ins, templates, or line-of-business integrations must be certified before deployment.
- Government and enterprise customers that already have an appropriate volume-licensing agreement.
“On-premises” does not mean permanently offline. Organizations may distribute updates from internal infrastructure, but activation, license validation, and some internet-based functionality can still require connectivity depending on the licensing and deployment design.

LTSC is usually a poor fit if the business expects:
- Continuous access to new Office features.
- Real-time co-authoring through Microsoft cloud services.
- OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, web apps, or cloud-backed security and compliance as part of the same solution.
- Copilot or other AI capabilities.
- Per-user installation across multiple computers, tablets, and phones.
- A single subscription bundling desktop applications, email, storage, and collaboration.
Microsoft says organizations already using Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise or Microsoft 365 Apps for business generally do not need LTSC 2024 because those subscriptions include the LTSC feature set plus additional cloud and continuously updated capabilities.
What is included?
For Windows volume licensing, Microsoft lists these products:
Rank #2
- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
- Office LTSC Standard 2024.
- Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024.
- Project Standard 2024 and Project Professional 2024.
- Visio LTSC Standard 2024 and Visio LTSC Professional 2024.
Office LTSC suites include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Access on Windows. Publisher is not included. On Mac, volume-licensed customers can obtain Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024. Microsoft Teams is not preinstalled with Office LTSC 2024 and must be handled separately.

The license does not include Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive storage, Teams services, or Microsoft 365 web apps. LTSC can connect to supported Microsoft 365 services, but compatibility with a service is not the same as receiving that service with the Office license.
What is new in Office LTSC 2024?
LTSC 2024 is not frozen at the feature level of Office 2019 or 2021. It includes several improvements, including:
- A new default Office theme and a more consistent visual design.
- Accessibility improvements, including Accessibility Ribbons.
- Excel dynamic charts that work with dynamic arrays.
- New Excel text and array functions.
- Performance improvements.
- Word session-recovery improvements.
- Outlook search and meeting-creation improvements.
- OpenDocument Format 1.4 support.
- Additional Office Add-in JavaScript API requirement sets.
- Security changes, including blocking internet-originated XLL add-ins by default.
Microsoft’s Office 2024 feature summary and Excel 2024 documentation provide the detailed feature lists.
Important omissions and changes
Publisher is not included
Organizations with Publisher workflows need a replacement plan. Microsoft says Publisher support ends after October 2026, so a new LTSC deployment should not be treated as a long-term Publisher strategy.
Teams is separate
Teams is not bundled as a preinstalled Office component. A business that needs Teams must license and deploy it separately or choose a Microsoft 365 plan that supplies the relevant service entitlement.

Excel Publish to Power BI is removed
Users who rely on Excel’s Publish to Power BI workflow may need to redesign that process before moving to LTSC 2024.
ActiveX is disabled by default
ActiveX controls are disabled by default, although administrators can re-enable them where necessary. Re-enabling legacy controls should be treated as a security and compatibility decision, not an automatic migration step.
Office LTSC 2024 versus Microsoft 365 Apps
| Area | Office LTSC 2024 | Microsoft 365 Apps |
|---|---|---|
| License model | Commercial volume licensing for a fixed release | Subscription licensing, primarily user-based |
| Feature updates | No new features after release | Continuous feature updates |
| Security and quality updates | Yes | Yes |
| Cloud services | Not included | Available according to the plan |
| Collaboration | More limited without separate cloud services | Designed to work with Microsoft cloud collaboration |
| AI and Copilot | LTSC alone does not qualify | Requires an eligible Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscription |
| Best fit | Fixed, controlled, regulated, or restricted environments | Cloud-connected workplaces needing current features |
Microsoft 365 Apps can generally be installed on up to five PCs or Macs, five tablets, and five phones per user, although exact entitlements depend on the subscription. Microsoft also offers device-based licensing for some shared-device environments. Those options may solve a licensing problem without providing the fully disconnected operation some LTSC customers require.
System requirements and supported operating systems
Windows
- 1.1 GHz or faster, two-core processor.
- 4 GB RAM.
- 4 GB available disk space.
- 1280 × 768 display.
- 64-bit Office is required for 4K and higher resolutions.
Microsoft lists Windows 11, Windows 11 LTSC 2024, Windows 10 LTSC 2021, Windows 10 LTSC 2019, Windows Server 2025, and Windows Server 2022 among the supported operating systems. Arm-based devices require Windows 11.
Do not read this as broad support for ordinary Windows 10. General Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the listed Windows 10 LTSC editions have separate servicing lifecycles. Confirm the exact Windows edition before procurement.
Mac
- Intel or Apple Silicon processor.
- 4 GB RAM.

Deployment and activation
Office LTSC 2024 uses Microsoft’s Click-to-Run deployment technology. Organizations can continue using the Office Deployment Tool and enterprise distribution systems such as Microsoft Configuration Manager. It also retains major version 16.0, which helps preserve many existing Group Policy and registry-based configurations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical deployment sequence is:
- Confirm volume-licensing entitlement, platform, edition, languages, and architecture.
- Download the Office Deployment Tool from Microsoft.
- Create and test an XML configuration file.
- Remove conflicting Office installations where required.
- Download installation files to a local distribution point.
- Install the package on a test device.
- Activate using KMS or MAK, according to the licensing agreement.
- Test macros, add-ins, templates, Outlook profiles, file associations, document-management plug-ins, and line-of-business integrations.
- Configure the update source and internal servicing controls.
- Pilot the release before broad deployment.
The typical Office Deployment Tool command pattern is:
setup.exe /download configuration.xml
setup.exe /configure configuration.xml
These commands only download and install the configured package. They do not by themselves determine the correct product ID, channel, language, exclusions, update path, license entitlement, or activation method.
KMS and MAK activation are supported. Activation must be planned separately from installation, especially for disconnected or intermittently connected environments.
Migration risks from Office 2016, 2019, or 2021
Moving to LTSC 2024 may be less disruptive than changing productivity suites, but it is not risk-free:

- Packaging, update, inventory, and application-management workflows may need to change.
- 32-bit versus 64-bit architecture can affect VBA, add-ins, drivers, and integrations.
- The shared 16.0 major version helps with policy and configuration continuity, but it does not guarantee compatibility.
- Add-ins that worked with Office LTSC 2021 or Office 2019 are likely to work, but still require testing.
- ActiveX controls, XLL add-ins, Power BI publishing, and Publisher workflows deserve specific migration tests.
Support lifecycle: the date buyers must plan around
Office LTSC 2024 follows Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy. It has five years of support, no Extended Support period, and an end-of-support date of October 9, 2029.
Best Value
- GREAT ALTERNATIVE - This Open Office Suite is a great alternative to MS Office and enables you to create beautiful and practical Documents, Spreadsheets, and Presentations.
- VERSITLE - This DVD includes both Windows and Mac installation files, just follow the steps included on installation guide.
- LICENSE - Perpetual License granted and when connected to the internet the Open Office Suite will check for uptades and will give you the option to install them.
- EXTRAS - Enjoy all the Extras- Installation Guides, User Guides, Clipart Library, Template Library are all included on the DVD.
- COMPATIBLE - Extensive compatibility across Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and MacOS 10.7 to 10.15
That matters for organizations making a deployment decision in 2026. “Long-term servicing” describes the servicing model, not a ten-year support promise. A rollout should include a replacement, upgrade, or revalidation plan well before October 2029.

How to decide
Choose Office LTSC 2024 when most of these statements are true
- You need a fixed version for certification or application validation.
- Feature changes create operational or regulatory risk.
- Devices are specialized, shared, or tightly controlled.
- Your organization already has volume-licensing access.
- Cloud services are not central to the workflow.
- Updates must be staged or distributed through internal infrastructure.
- You accept support ending on October 9, 2029.
Choose Microsoft 365 Apps when most of these statements are true
- Users need current Office features.
- Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, web apps, or co-authoring are central.
- Employees work across several devices.
- You prefer per-user licensing and cloud administration.
- Copilot eligibility or other AI capabilities matter.
- Your organization can manage a continuously updated application.
Cost and buying guidance
There is no single public retail-style price that applies to every Office LTSC 2024 customer. Commercial pricing depends on the licensing program, edition, agreement, quantity, geography, and optional Software Assurance. Obtain a quote through your Microsoft licensing channel or an authorized partner.
Do not compare an LTSC quote directly with a consumer Office listing or an unverified “lifetime Office” key. Those may have different rights, support, activation, and authenticity. For small businesses, Microsoft 365 Apps for business or a broader plan such as Microsoft 365 Business Standard may be more practical when desktop apps, storage, email, and collaboration are needed together. Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise is the more relevant comparison for larger organizations requiring enterprise deployment and cloud management.
The core financial trade-off is straightforward: LTSC provides a fixed commercial Office release without a conventional per-user subscription for that client, but it does not include Microsoft 365 services and does not automatically provide rights to the next major Office release. Microsoft 365 shifts the cost toward recurring subscription licensing while providing continuously updated apps and plan-dependent cloud services.
Bottom line
Office LTSC 2024 is a legitimate and supported choice for organizations that value a stable, controlled Office image more than cloud-first productivity. It is not simply “better” or “more secure” than Microsoft 365 Apps, and it is not a standard retail product for every business.
Before buying, verify the volume-licensing route, the exact Windows or Mac requirements, activation design, add-in and macro compatibility, Publisher and Power BI dependencies, and the October 9, 2029 support deadline.
