What Microsoft’s Surface trade-in program offers
Microsoft’s U.S. consumer program has two parts. A standard trade-in lets you submit an eligible device for a cash appraisal. A promotional trade-in may add cash back if you first buy a qualifying new Surface and meet the promotion’s claim requirements. In both cases, Teladvance handles the appraisal and trade-in process.

As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft advertises up to an extra $400 cash back for eligible Surface trade-ins linked to a qualifying new Surface Pro or Surface Laptop purchase made online through the Microsoft Store from August 3 through September 30, 2026. The customer receives the device’s approved trade-in value plus any promotional amount for which the claim qualifies; the advertised maximum is not a guaranteed bonus for every device or purchase.

- You must submit the trade-in claim and proof of purchase within the applicable promotion period. Microsoft’s instructions say to wait for the order to ship where applicable before submitting.
- After completing the online trade-in process, mail the device within 15 days, subject to the terms shown for your claim.
Check the live trade-in terms before purchasing because promotion conditions can change. The Surface storefront lists eligible product information; a separate checkout discount should not be counted as trade-in money.
Which Surface devices qualify?
Microsoft’s program covers eligible Surface devices and other eligible electronics, but the product family name alone does not establish eligibility. A Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, Surface Go, or Surface Book may or may not qualify depending on its exact model and configuration. Use the live Teladvance appraisal tool to find the available model and get an estimate.

Condition requirements and inspection
Microsoft’s stated criteria include the following. The questionnaire records the condition you report; Teladvance checks the device after it arrives. The final value may differ from the initial estimate.

- The device powers on, works fully, and its battery holds a charge without being continuously connected to power.
- It has no broken or missing components, cracked screen, or liquid damage.
- It has no unauthorized modifications, and its warranty seal is intact.
- It is not password-protected or locked in a way that prevents assessment.
- Include the original charger, accessories, and hard drive where required by the terms.
Choose the exact model and answer the condition questions accurately. A wrong configuration, missing required item, or undisclosed fault can affect eligibility or the inspected value.

How to trade in a Surface
- Back up your files. Use Windows Backup or another trusted method, and export browser data and authentication information you need to keep.
- Remove accounts and personal data. Sign out of Microsoft, OneDrive, Office, and other accounts, disable device tracking where applicable, and perform a full Windows reset. Confirm the device is no longer password-protected.
- Get an appraisal. Start from Microsoft’s trade-in page, continue to Teladvance, choose the device type, brand, exact model, configuration, and condition, indicate included accessories, then select Calculate Value.
- Submit the trade-in. If eligible, create or sign in to a Teladvance account and follow the instructions. For the promotion, upload proof of purchase as directed.
- Save proof of purchase if needed. Sign in to the Microsoft account used for the purchase, open Order history, find the Surface order, select Details, save the order details as a PDF, and upload it in the Teladvance flow.
- Pack and ship on time. Print the prepaid label, include required accessories, protect the device securely, and send it within the applicable 15-day deadline. Keep the tracking number and shipping receipt.
- Review the inspection outcome. Teladvance inspects the device and confirms the final value. Follow the instructions for accepting any revised appraisal before payment.
How much is a Surface trade-in worth?
There is no single published trade-in price for every Surface. The estimate depends on the exact generation and processor, RAM and storage, screen size and display, wireless configuration, functional and battery condition, damage, and included accessories. An active promotional bonus and whether the new purchase qualifies also affect the total cash back.
Use the live Teladvance appraisal rather than assuming that another device in the same Surface family has the same value. The estimate is not necessarily the final payment: inspection can change it.

Payment timing, changed values, and rejected devices
For the U.S. consumer program, Microsoft describes payment by PayPal or bank transfer after the device is received, inspected, and approved. Its detailed North America instructions say payment is generally issued within 14 days after approval, while another support FAQ says payment may take up to 30 days. Microsoft also describes the overall process as typically taking about 14–15 days. Treat the applicable Teladvance terms and your confirmation as controlling; do not rely on a guaranteed payment date.

If inspection finds a discrepancy, keep your appraisal confirmation and review any revised amount before accepting it. The current Microsoft pages do not clearly spell out every deadline or remedy for rejecting a revised value, so check the live Teladvance terms before shipping. Photograph the device powered on, its serial number, screen, ports, and included accessories; retain the shipping receipt and tracking record.

Microsoft says a device that fails the criteria may be returned to you for free or recycled. Do not assume a rejected device will automatically be returned: follow the available instructions and select or confirm the outcome. A recycled device earns no cash back.
Is the offer better than selling your Surface?
Compare the expected net outcome, not just the advertised bonus. Check the live appraisal, then compare it with realistic private-sale prices for the same configuration and condition. Subtract the time and effort of listing, negotiating, answering questions, shipping, and managing the risk of a sale.
- The trade-in may suit you if you are already buying a qualifying new Surface, value prepaid shipping and a simpler transaction, and the appraisal plus eligible bonus is competitive.
- A private sale may return more for a recent, desirable model or a configuration with valuable accessories such as a keyboard, Pen, dock, or cellular connectivity. It may also be the practical route for a cosmetically imperfect device, though the sale takes more work and carries buyer and payment risks.
- Consider another retailer or recycler if you want an in-person handoff, store credit, or a route for a damaged device. Compare its current offer and terms directly; values vary and should not be assumed.
Do not buy a new Surface solely because of the trade-in bonus without comparing the total price against your budget and alternatives. Microsoft’s U.S. Surface store includes new and certified-refurbished models, but refurbished purchases are excluded from the cited promotion.

The consumer instructions above apply to personal trade-ins in the United States. Microsoft also has a separate North American business process through Teladvance. Its terms and eligible products differ; Microsoft advertises a business Surface promotion for eligible purchases from July 13 through September 30, 2026, with up to an extra $400 cash back. Businesses trading in 20 or more devices may qualify for customized shipping and handling. Use the separate business appraisal flow and verify its current offer terms rather than applying consumer rules to a fleet.
Availability outside the United States
This article’s promotion and main instructions describe the U.S. online consumer offer. Microsoft identifies Teladvance as the consumer partner in the U.S. and Canada, and Recommerce as a partner in several European markets, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Availability, payment methods, and eligibility vary by country; check Microsoft’s regional trade-in information rather than assuming the U.S. promotion applies elsewhere.
